Honour your friendship and keep your promise.
أكْرِمْ وُدَّكَ، واحْفَظْ عَهْدَكَ۔

Affection is an auspicious blessing.
اَلتَّوَدُّدُ (التُّؤَدَةُ) يُمْنٌ۔

When you love [something or someone] then do not be excessive [in your love].
إذا أحْبَبْتَ فَلا تُكْثِرُ۔

When friendship gets established then [mutual] co-operation and support becomes necessary.
إذا ثَبَتَ الوُدُّ وَجَبَ التَّرافُدُ والتَّعاضُدُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Through affection comes love.
بِالتَّوَدُّدِ تَكُونُ المَحَبَّةُ۔

The best person in granting favours is the one who begins by [showing] friendship.
أفْضَلُ النّاسِ مِنَّةً مَنْ بَدَأَ بِالمَوَدَّةِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The quickest friendships to get cut off are the friendships of wicked people.
أسْرَعُ المَوَدّاتِ اِنْقِطاعاً مَوَدّاتُ الأشْرارِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Verily friendship is expressed by the tongue whereas love is expressed by the gaze (or the eyes).
إنَّ المَوَدَّةَ يُعَبِّرُ عَنْهَا اللِّسانُ، وَعَنِ المَحَبَّةِ العَيْنانِ (العَيانُ)۔

Friendship is kinship.
اَلْمَوَدَّةُ رَحِمٌ۔

Friendship is affinity.
اَلْمَوَدَّةُ نَسَبٌ۔

Friendship is the closest relationship.
اَلْمَوَدَّةُ أقْرَبُ نَسَب۔

Friendship is the closest kinship.
اَلْمَوَدَّةُ أقْرَبُ رَحِم۔

Friendship is an acquired affinity.
اَلْمَوَدَّةُ نَسَبٌ مُسْتَفادٌ۔

Being friendly with people is the cornerstone of intelligence.
اَلتَّوَدُّدُ إلَى النّاسِ رَأسُ العَقْلِ۔

Friendship for the sake of Allah is the best relationship.
اَلمَوَدَّةُ فِي اللّهِ أقْرَبُ نَسَب۔

Friendship for the sake of Allah is stronger than the bond of blood-relationship.
اَلْمَوَدَّةُ فِي اللّهِ آكَدُ مِنْ وَشيجِ الرَّحِمِ۔

By [showing] affection love is strengthened.
بِالتَّوَدُّدِ تَتَأَكَّدُ المَحَبَّةُ۔

Three things bring about love: religion, humility and generosity.
ثَلاثَةٌ يُوجِبْنَ المَحَبَّةَ: الدّينُ، والتَّواضُعُ، والسَّخاءُ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Three things bring about love: good character, good companionship and humility.
ثَلاثٌ يُوجِبْنَ المَحَبَّةَ: حُسْنُ الخُلْقِ، وحُسْنُ الرِّفْقِ، وَالتَّواضُعُ۔

The best choice is making friends with the virtuous.
خَيْرُ الاِخْتِيار مُوادَّةُ الأخْيارِ۔

—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
The cornerstone of intelligence is being friendly with the people.
رَأسُ العَقْلِ التَّوَدُّدُ إلَى النّاسِ۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Many a [seemingly] friendly person is only feigning [friendship].
رُبَّ مُتَوَدِّد مُتَصَنِّع۔
—Ghurar al-Hikam
—غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
Ask the hearts about [your] affections, for indeed they are witnesses that do not accept bribes.
سَلُوا القُلُوبَ عَنِ المَودّاتِ: فَإنَّها شَواهِدُ لاتَقْبَلُ الرُّشا۔

Soundness of friendship is part of honouring one’s promise.
صِحَّةُ الوُدِّمِنْ كَرَمِ العَهْدِ۔
