Conceit

One who admires his [own] speech, his intellect has departed. مَنْ أعْجَبَهُ قَوْلُهُ فَقدْ غَرَبَ عَقْلُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose self-admiration increases, his correctness reduces. مَنْ كَثُرَ إعْجابُهُ قَلَّ صَوابُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who becomes conceited by his action nullifies his reward. مَنْ أُعْجِبَ بِعَمَلِهِ أحْبَطَ أجْرَهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who admires his good state falls short of attaining good expediencies. مَنْ أُعْجِبَ بِحُسْنِ حالَتِهَ قَصَّرَ عَنْ حُسْنِ حيلَتِهِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Adversity does not descend upon the one who abandons conceit and lassitude. مَنْ تَرَكَ العُجْبَ والتَّوانِيَ لَمْ يَنْزِلْ بِهِ مَكْرُوهٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم No one admires his own opinion except the ignorant one. ما أُعْجِبَ بِرَأْيِهِ إلاّ جاهِلٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Nothing damages [one’s] merits [and good deeds] like conceit. ما أضَرَّ المَحاسِنَ كَالعُجْبِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم What has the son of Adam to do with conceit?
