Doubt And Misgiving

Doubt corrupts certitude and nullifies faith. اَلشَكُ يُفْسِدُ اليَقينَ ويُبْطِلُ الدِّينَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Be wary of doubt, for verily it corrupts religion and nullifies certitude. إيّاكَ والشَّكَّ، فَإنَّهُ يُفْسِدُ الدِّينَ، ويُبْطِلُ اليَقينَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The most destructive thing is doubt and uncertainty, and the most constructive thing is piety and... أهْلَكُ شَيْء اَلشَّكُّ والاِرْتيابُ، وأمْلَكُ شَيْء الوَرَعُ وَالاِجْتِنابُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Doubt is misgiving. اَلشَّكُّ اِرْتيابٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Doubt [in the existence of God] is disbelief. اَلشَّكُّ كُفْرٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Doubt corrupts religion. اَلشَّكُّ يُفْسِدُ الدِّينَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Doubt nullifies faith. اَلشَّكُّ يُحْبِطُ الإيمانَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Doubt is the fruit of ignorance. اَلشَّكُّ ثَمَرَةُ الجَهْلِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Doubt leads to polytheism. اَلاِرْتيابُ يُوجِبُ الشِّرْكَ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Doubt puts out the light of the heart. اَلشَّكُّ يُطْفِيُ نُورَ القَلْبِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Indeed doubt was only named ‘shubha’ because it resembles the truth. As for the close friends... إنَّما سُمِّيَتْ الشُّبْهَةُ شُبْهَةً لأنَّها تُشْبِهُ الْحَقَّ، فَأمّا أوْلِياءُاللّهِ فَضِيائُهُمْ فيها اليَقينُ، ودَليلُهُمْ... —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The bane of certitude is doubt. آفَةُ اليَقينِ اَلشَّكُّ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم By continued doubt [in God], polytheism comes about. بِدَوامِ الشَّكِّ يَحْدُثُ الشِّرْكُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The fruit of doubt is perplexity. ثَمَرَةُ الشَّكِّ الحَيْرَةُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم It is possible that conjecture may [turn out to] be correct. رُبَّما أدْرَكَ الظَّنُّ بِالصَّوابِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم The cause of perplexity is doubt. سَبَبُ الحَيْرَةِ الشَّكُّ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم I am amazed at the one who doubts in the power of Allah while he sees His creation! عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ يَشُكُّ في قُدْرَةِ اللّهِ وهُوَ يَرى خَلْقَهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Acting suspicious is a shame and having an eager desire to backbite is [a cause of entering]... فِعْلُ الرِّيْبَةِ عارٌ، والوُلُوعُ بِالغيْبَةِ نارٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Everything that is devoid of certitude is [mere] conjecture and dubiety. كُلُّ ما خَلاَ اليَقينِ ظَنٌّ وشُكُوكٌ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم Every person has a [desire and a] need, so distance yourselves from suspicion. لِكُلِّ إنْسان أرَبٌ فَابْعُدُوا عَنِ الرَّيْبِ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم A person will never go astray until his doubt overcomes his certainty. لَنْ يَضِلَّ المَرْءُ حتّى يَغْلِبَ شَكُّهُ يَقينَهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One who falters increases his doubt. مَنْ يَتَرَدَّدْ يَزْدَدْ شَكّاً۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose doubt increases, his religion gets corrupted. مَنْ كَثُرَ شَكُّهُُ فَسَدَ دينُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم One whose suspicion increase, his backbiting [also] increases. مَنْ كَثُرَتْ رِيبَتُهُ، كَثُرَتْ غيبَتُهُ۔ —Ghurar al-Hikam —غُرَرُ الحِکَم و دُرَرُ الکَلِم
