Repeating the apology is a reminder of the [past] sins.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Apologizing And Offering Excuses)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Repeating the apology is a reminder of the [past] sins.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.
The key word in this Hadith is (i'adatu al-i'thār) "إعادَةُ الاِعْتِذارِ", which translates to "repeating the apology." This implies that when one seeks forgiveness for their sins, it is not enough to merely apologize once. Rather, it is necessary to continuously remind oneself of their past transgressions, acknowledging their mistakes and seeking repentance.
This concept of repeatedly seeking forgiveness is beautifully emphasized in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 222:
Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.
This verse highlights the importance of continuous repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah, as it is an act that is beloved to Him.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 56, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.
This verse reminds us that seeking forgiveness and repentance is not only a means to purify ourselves, but also to prevent further corruption and wrongdoing. It serves as a constant reminder to refrain from repeating past sins and to strive for righteousness.
By repeating the apology, we are constantly reminded of our own shortcomings and the need for self-improvement. This practice instills humility within us and keeps us grounded, preventing arrogance and complacency. It serves as a motivation to rectify our actions, seek forgiveness, and strive for a better relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Moreover, repeating the apology also has profound consequences on our spiritual growth. It allows us to reflect on our past mistakes, learn from them, and develop a stronger sense of self-awareness. This self-reflection enables us to identify patterns of behavior that lead to sin and make conscious efforts to avoid them in the future.
Additionally, repeating the apology serves as a powerful reminder of the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It reinforces the understanding that no matter how grave our sins may be, Allah's mercy is always within reach. As stated in Surah Az-Zumar, verse 53:
Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of continuously seeking forgiveness and repeating the apology. It serves as a reminder of our past sins, motivates us to improve ourselves, and reinforces our reliance on the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May we always be mindful of our actions, seek repentance, and strive for a closer relationship with our Creator.
