(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ذُو المَعْرُوفِ مَحْمُودُ العادَةِ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever shows benevolence, his habit is praised.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. "ذُو المَعْرُوفِ" refers to someone who possesses or demonstrates "المَعْرُوفِ," which can be understood as acts of kindness, goodness, or benevolence. It encompasses any action that is in accordance with what is known to be virtuous and morally upright. "مَحْمُودُ" means praiseworthy or commendable, indicating that the person who engages in acts of kindness is deserving of admiration and recognition. Finally, "العادَةِ" refers to one's habit or customary behavior, implying that kindness should be an inherent and consistent trait in a person's character.
The importance of showing benevolence and kindness is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83),
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
This verse highlights the importance of doing good to others, including parents, relatives, orphans, and the needy. It emphasizes the significance of speaking kind words and performing acts of charity. By doing so, one not only fulfills their obligations towards fellow human beings but also earns the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Additionally, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse emphasizes the importance of justice and fairness in our dealings with others. It encourages Muslims to be just and not let personal biases or animosity cloud their judgment. By treating others with kindness and fairness, we uphold the principles of Islam and earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Now, let us reflect on the wise message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the significance of consistently demonstrating acts of kindness and benevolence. It is not enough to perform isolated acts of goodness; rather, it is the habitual practice of kindness that is praiseworthy.
When we consistently engage in acts of kindness, it becomes a part of our character and defines who we are as individuals. It shapes our interactions with others and contributes to the betterment of society as a whole. By making kindness our habit, we create a positive ripple effect that can inspire others to follow suit.
Moreover, the habit of benevolence brings about numerous benefits. It fosters strong and harmonious relationships, builds trust and goodwill, and creates a sense of unity among Muslims. It also allows us to fulfill our duty towards our fellow human beings and exemplify the teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to consistently engage in acts of kindness and benevolence. By making goodness our habit, we not only earn the praise of others but also seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us strive to embody the teachings of Islam and become individuals who are known for their unwavering commitment to acts of kindness and compassion. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness.
