— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Hereafter)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the development of the permanent abode, which refers to the Hereafter, over the temporary abode of this world. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.

The word (imarat) "عِمارَةِ" in the Hadith refers to the act of building or developing. It signifies the effort and dedication required to construct or establish something. In this context, it represents the actions and deeds that we engage in during our lives. The word (dar) "دارِ" means abode or dwelling place, indicating the different realms or stages of existence.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that we are in greater need of developing the permanent abode, which is the Hereafter, than we are of building the temporary abode, which is this worldly life. This means that our focus and priority should be on preparing for the eternal life to come, rather than being solely preoccupied with the transient and fleeting pleasures of this world.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201),

Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking goodness in both this world and the Hereafter, but with a clear recognition that the Hereafter holds greater significance.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us,

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse emphasizes that while worldly possessions and relationships may bring temporary pleasure and adornment, it is the enduring good deeds that hold true value and reward in the sight of Allah.

Reflecting on the Hadith, we can understand that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging us to prioritize our actions and efforts towards building a strong foundation for the Hereafter. This entails focusing on acts of worship, seeking knowledge, performing righteous deeds, and purifying our hearts and intentions. By doing so, we are investing in the eternal life that awaits us, rather than being consumed by the temporary distractions and pursuits of this world.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful saying serves as a reminder that our time in this world is limited, and our ultimate goal should be to secure a place in the everlasting abode of the Hereafter. It encourages us to reflect on our priorities and make conscious choices that align with the teachings of Islam. By focusing on the development of our souls and the cultivation of a strong relationship with Allah, we can attain true success and everlasting happiness.

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to prioritize the permanent abode over the temporary abode, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us success in both this world and the Hereafter.
