إيّاكَ وطاعَةَ الهَوى، فَإنَّهُ يَقُودُ إلى كُلِّ مِحْنَة۔
Beware of yielding to vain desire, for indeed it leads [one] towards every [form of] tribulation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
إيّاكَ وطاعَةَ الهَوى، فَإنَّهُ يَقُودُ إلى كُلِّ مِحْنَة۔
This can be translated as:
Beware of yielding to vain desire, for indeed it leads [one] towards every [form of] tribulation.
In this wise utterance, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns Muslims against following their base desires and whims. The word (hawa) "هَوى" refers to vain desires, inclinations, or whims that are not aligned with the guidance of Allah. It encompasses the temptations of the worldly life, the pursuit of materialistic pleasures, and the fulfillment of selfish desires without considering the consequences or the commandments of Allah.
To understand the significance of this warning, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-control and the dangers of following one's desires. In Surah Al-Qasas, verse 50, Allah says: (Quran 28:50)
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse highlights the consequences of blindly following one's desires without seeking guidance from Allah. It leads to straying from the right path and falling into misguidance. Similarly, in Surah Al-Jathiyah, verse 23, Allah warns: (Quran 45:23)
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?
Here, Allah describes those who make their desires their gods, prioritizing their own whims over the commandments of Allah. As a consequence, they are led astray, their hearts and minds become sealed, and they are unable to see the truth. This serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious and not fall into the trap of following their vain desires.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warning about the dangers of yielding to vain desires is a call to self-discipline and self-restraint. It serves as a reminder that true success lies in aligning our actions and choices with the guidance of Allah, rather than being driven by our own fleeting desires. By resisting the temptations of the worldly life and striving to fulfill the commandments of Allah, we protect ourselves from the tribulations and hardships that result from indulging in vain desires.
The consequences of yielding to vain desires can be seen throughout history and in our own lives. When individuals prioritize their own desires over the teachings of Islam, they often find themselves facing various tribulations. These tribulations can manifest in the form of moral decay, broken relationships, financial difficulties, and a loss of spiritual fulfillment. By disregarding the guidance of Allah and following their whims, individuals become vulnerable to the negative consequences of their actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warning is not meant to suppress our natural desires, but rather to guide us towards channeling them in a way that is pleasing to Allah. Islam recognizes the importance of fulfilling legitimate desires within the boundaries set by Allah. However, when desires become the driving force behind our actions, without considering the moral and ethical implications, they can lead us astray.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words, we are reminded of the need for self-awareness and self-control. We must strive to align our desires with the teachings of Islam, seeking guidance from the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt. By doing so, we protect ourselves from the pitfalls of following vain desires and open the doors to true success and contentment in this life and the hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to resist the temptations of our vain desires and guide us towards a path that is pleasing to Him. Ameen.
