مَنْ كَشَفَ ضُرَّهُ لِلنّاسِ عَذَّبَ نَفْسَهُ۔
One who discloses his suffering to the people torments himself.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Suffering)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ كَشَفَ ضُرَّهُ لِلنّاسِ عَذَّبَ نَفْسَهُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
One who discloses his suffering to the people torments himself.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful Hadith in light of the Quran. The key word in this Hadith is (kashafa) "كَشَفَ", which means to disclose or reveal. It implies the act of openly sharing one's personal hardships or difficulties with others. The word (dhurrah) "ضُرَّهُ" refers to suffering or distress, encompassing any form of physical, emotional, or spiritual pain.
To understand the wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and will not burden us with more than we can handle. Therefore, when we disclose our suffering to others, we may inadvertently increase our own burden by inviting unnecessary opinions, judgments, or gossip.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against suspicion and backbiting, saying,
And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it.
This verse highlights the importance of guarding our tongues and refraining from disclosing the personal struggles of others without their consent. It reminds us of the harm that can be caused by spreading rumors and engaging in idle talk.
Imam Ali's statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that it is better to keep our personal suffering private, seeking solace in Allah's mercy and guidance. By doing so, we protect ourselves from the potential harm that can arise from disclosing our hardships to others. This does not mean that we should isolate ourselves or refrain from seeking help when needed. Rather, it emphasizes the importance of choosing the right confidants who can provide genuine support and guidance without causing further harm.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense wisdom and deep understanding of the teachings of Islam. His knowledge and insight were unparalleled, and he served as a beacon of guidance for Muslims throughout history. In this Hadith, he reminds us of the importance of guarding our tongues and protecting ourselves from unnecessary pain and suffering.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the wisdom of keeping our personal suffering private. By refraining from disclosing our hardships to others, we protect ourselves from potential harm and maintain our dignity. Instead, we should turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of difficulty, seeking His guidance and mercy. May Allah grant us the wisdom to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and protect us from unnecessary pain and suffering.
