— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ جاهَدَ عَلى إقامَةِ الحَقِّ وُفِّقَ۔

This can be translated as,

One who struggles to establish the truth is granted success [by Allah].

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran. The word (jahada) "جاهَدَ" in this Hadith refers to the act of striving or struggling. It signifies a sincere and relentless effort to uphold and establish the truth. This struggle can take various forms, such as intellectual, spiritual, or physical, depending on the circumstances.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of striving for the truth in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:78), Allah says,

And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty.

This verse encourages Muslims to exert their utmost effort in the path of Allah, seeking His pleasure and adhering to the truth.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:69), Allah states,

And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.

This verse assures us that those who sincerely strive for the sake of Allah will be guided by Him towards the right path. It highlights the divine assistance that is granted to those who exert themselves in the pursuit of truth.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes that those who engage in the struggle to establish the truth will be granted success by Allah. This success is not limited to worldly achievements, but it encompasses spiritual growth, inner peace, and the ultimate success in the Hereafter. It is a comprehensive success that encompasses all aspects of life.

When one strives to establish the truth, they are actively opposing falsehood, injustice, and oppression. This struggle requires courage, determination, and unwavering faith. It may involve facing challenges, hardships, and even persecution. However, the promise of success from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) serves as a source of motivation and encouragement for the believers.

The success granted by Allah to those who strive for the truth can manifest in various ways. It can be seen in the positive impact they have on society, the positive change they bring about, and the guidance they provide to others. Their efforts can inspire others to join the path of truth and righteousness, creating a ripple effect that spreads goodness and justice.

Moreover, the success granted by Allah is not limited to the immediate outcomes of one's struggle. It extends to the eternal rewards in the Hereafter. The believers who strive for the truth will be rewarded with Paradise, where they will dwell in the presence of Allah and enjoy everlasting bliss.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of striving to establish the truth. It reminds us that Allah grants success to those who sincerely engage in this struggle. By drawing inspiration from the Quranic verses that emphasize the significance of striving for the truth, we can understand the connotation behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words. May Allah grant us the strength and guidance to always strive for the truth and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
