مَنْ ساءَ ظَنُّهُ تَأمَّلَ۔
One whose assumption [about others] is negative, scrutinizes.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Conjecture)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ ساءَ ظَنُّهُ تَأمَّلَ۔
This can be translated as,
One whose assumption [about others] is negative, scrutinizes.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its implications in the light of the Quran.
The word "ظَنُّهُ" in the Hadith refers to one's assumption or opinion about others. It is derived from the root word "ظَنَّ" which means to think, suppose, or assume. This implies that our thoughts and assumptions about others play a significant role in shaping our perception and interactions with them.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the negative consequences of having a pessimistic or negative assumption about others. When we harbor negative thoughts and assumptions, we tend to scrutinize every action, word, or gesture of the person we are assuming negatively about. This constant scrutiny can lead to misunderstandings, strained relationships, and even conflicts.
To understand the importance of having positive assumptions about others, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the prohibition of negative assumptions and highlights the gravity of this sin. It compares negative assumptions to backbiting and spying, both of which are condemned in Islam. Just as we would detest consuming the flesh of a deceased person, we should detest harboring negative assumptions about our fellow Muslims.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
Why did not the believing men and believing women, when you heard it, think good of one another and say, 'This is an obvious falsehood'?
This verse refers to an incident where false accusations were made against the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), Aisha (رضي الله عنها). Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) admonishes the believers for not thinking well of one another and immediately assuming the worst. This serves as a reminder for us to have positive assumptions about our fellow Muslims and to refrain from hastily judging them based on rumors or hearsay.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to reflect on the consequences of negative assumptions. When we assume the worst about others, we create an atmosphere of mistrust, suspicion, and hostility. This not only damages our relationships but also hinders the unity and harmony within the Muslim community.
On the other hand, having positive assumptions about others fosters a sense of empathy, understanding, and compassion. It allows us to give people the benefit of the doubt and to approach them with kindness and fairness. By assuming the best in others, we create an environment of trust, love, and unity.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thought-provoking Hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to be mindful of their assumptions and to strive for positive thinking. Let us follow the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) by cultivating a mindset of optimism, understanding, and goodwill towards our fellow believers. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in purifying our thoughts and assumptions, and may He grant us the ability to foster unity and love within the Muslim ummah.
