اَلجَزَعُ مِنْ أعوانِ الزَّمانِ۔
Anxiety is one of the assistants of the [difficult] time.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Anxiety)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Anxiety is one of the assistants of the [difficult] time.
This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the role of anxiety during challenging periods. To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us explore the key words and their implications.
The word (الجزع) "jazaa" refers to anxiety or distress. It signifies a state of unease and restlessness that arises from fear or worry. It is a natural human emotion that can be triggered by various circumstances, such as uncertainty, danger, or impending difficulties. Anxiety can manifest in different ways, including mental distress, physical symptoms, and emotional turmoil.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes anxiety as one of the (أعوان) "a'wan" of the (الزَّمان) "zaman", which can be translated as "assistants" or "helpers" of the time. This implies that anxiety is a common companion during challenging periods, serving as a reminder of the fragility of life and the need for reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is important to note that the term "zaman" refers to both specific moments and broader periods of time.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse assures us that even during difficult times, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not place a burden on us that exceeds our capacity. Therefore, when anxiety arises, we should remember that it is a test from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and have faith that we have the strength to overcome it.
Another verse that sheds light on the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Inshirah, verse 5-6, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, with hardship, there is relief. Indeed, with hardship, there is relief.
This verse emphasizes the cyclical nature of life, where periods of difficulty are followed by moments of ease. It serves as a reminder that anxiety and distress are temporary, and they will eventually be replaced by tranquility and relief.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the role of anxiety during challenging times to remind us of the importance of seeking solace in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and relying on His guidance. During moments of anxiety, we should turn to prayer, supplication, and remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to find comfort and strength. By doing so, we can transform our anxiety into a means of spiritual growth and a reminder of our dependence on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Additionally, this Hadith serves as a reminder to support and empathize with others who may be experiencing anxiety during difficult times. As Muslims, we should offer a helping hand, provide emotional support, and remind them of the power of faith and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that anxiety is a natural response during challenging times. It serves as a reminder of our vulnerability as human beings and the need to rely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By turning to the Quran, we find solace in the reassurance that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not burden us beyond our capacity and that relief will come after hardship. Let us use anxiety as a catalyst for spiritual growth, seeking strength in prayer and supplication, and supporting one another during difficult times. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to overcome anxiety and find peace in His remembrance.
