— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opportunity And Its Loss)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

غافِصِ الفُرْصَةَ عِنْدَ إمْكانِها فَإنَّكَ غَيْرُ مُدْرِكِها بَعْدَ فَوْتِها۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise, as once they are lost, they cannot be regained.

Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (ghafis) "غافِصِ" means to seize or take hold of something. It implies actively and decisively grabbing an opportunity when it presents itself. (al-fursah) "الفُرْصَةَ" refers to an opportunity or a favorable moment. It signifies a specific time or circumstance that can lead to success or benefit. (‘inda imkaniha) "عِنْدَ إمْكانِها" means when it is within one's capability or reach. It highlights the importance of recognizing and utilizing opportunities when one has the ability to do so. (fa innaka ghayru mudrikha ba'da fawtiha)

فَإنَّكَ غَيْرُ مُدْرِكِها بَعْدَ فَوْتِها

translates to

for indeed you will not get it [again] after you lose it.

This part of the Hadith emphasizes the irreversible nature of lost opportunities and the regret that follows.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the wisdom behind seizing opportunities. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20):

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse reminds us that the opportunities and pleasures of this worldly life are temporary and fleeting. Just as a rain shower brings forth lush vegetation, it eventually dries up, withers, and becomes scattered debris. Similarly, opportunities in life come and go, and if we fail to seize them, we may be left with nothing but regret.

Another verse that resonates with the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3):

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse highlights the importance of utilizing time wisely. It reminds us that humanity is in a state of loss, except for those who believe, perform good deeds, and encourage one another towards truth and patience. This advice encompasses seizing opportunities for good deeds and making the most of our time to benefit ourselves and others.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that opportunities are not infinite. They come and go, and once lost, they cannot be regained. Therefore, it is crucial for Muslims to be vigilant and proactive in recognizing and seizing opportunities that come their way. Whether it is an opportunity to gain knowledge, perform acts of worship, help others, or seek personal growth, we must not delay or procrastinate.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and he understood the value of seizing opportunities. His life serves as a shining example for Muslims, as he actively sought out opportunities to serve Allah and humanity. He was known for his quick decision-making, his ability to seize the moment, and his unwavering commitment to justice and righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges Muslims to seize opportunities when they arise, as they may not come again. It reminds us of the transient nature of opportunities and the regret that follows their loss. By reflecting on the Quranic verses mentioned, we understand the significance of utilizing time wisely and making the most of the opportunities presented to us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to seize the opportunities that come our way and use them for the betterment of ourselves and humanity.
