عادَةُ المُنافِقينَ تَهْزيعُ الأخْلاقِ۔
It is the habit of hypocrites to change their character [depending on their circumstances].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Hypocrite)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the characteristic of hypocrisy, specifically the tendency of hypocrites to alter their behavior and morals based on their surroundings. The word (aadatu) "عادَةُ" refers to a habit or a customary behavior, while (al-munafiqeen) "المُنافِقينَ" refers to the hypocrites. The word (tahzi'u) "تَهْزيعُ" means to change or alter. And (al-akhlaq) "الأخْلاقِ" refers to character or morals.
To better understand the concept of hypocrisy and its consequences, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the hypocrites in several verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:11-12)
And when it is said to them, 'Do not cause corruption on the earth,' they say, 'We are but reformers.' Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive it not.
This verse highlights the deceptive nature of hypocrites, who claim to be reformers but actually cause corruption. Their ability to change their character based on their circumstances allows them to deceive others and hide their true intentions. They may appear righteous and pious in front of others, but their true nature is revealed when they are put to the test.
Another verse that sheds light on the behavior of hypocrites is found in Surah Al-Munafiqoon. Allah says, (Quran 63:4)
And when you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?
This verse describes the superficial nature of hypocrites. They may appear pleasing and their words may sound convincing, but their true essence is hollow and devoid of sincerity. They are like pieces of wood propped up, lacking any real substance. They are constantly on guard, fearing that their true identity will be exposed.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be aware of the dangers of hypocrisy and to strive for consistency in their character and morals. Hypocrisy not only harms the individual but also undermines the unity and strength of the Muslim community.
The habit of changing one's character based on circumstances can have severe consequences. It leads to a lack of authenticity and sincerity in one's actions, which ultimately weakens the trust and respect others have for that individual. Moreover, it creates confusion and division within society, as people are unsure of who they can truly rely on.
As Muslims, we are encouraged to embody the qualities of honesty, integrity, and consistency in our character. Allah says in the Quran, (Quran 9:119)
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
This verse emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with individuals who are sincere and true in their beliefs and actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) amazing Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for authenticity and consistency in their character, regardless of the circumstances they find themselves in. By doing so, we can build a strong and united Muslim community, rooted in the principles of truth and righteousness. May Allah guide us all on the path of sincerity and protect us from the pitfalls of hypocrisy.
