عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ عَرَفَ دَواءَ دائِهِ فَلا يَطْلُبُهُ وإنْ وَجَدَهُ لَمْ يَتَداوَ بِهِ۔

I am amazed at the one who knows the remedy of his ailment yet does not seek it, and if he finds it he does not apply it [to cure his ailment].

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remedy And Ailment)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expresses his astonishment at those who are aware of the cure for their ailments but fail to seek it, and even if they come across the remedy, they do not apply it. This statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) carries a deep spiritual and practical message for all Muslims.

The word (dawa) "دَواءَ" in the hadith refers to the remedy or cure for a particular ailment. It signifies the solution or means to alleviate one's suffering or distress. The word (da'ihi) "دائِهِ" refers to one's ailment or affliction. It represents the challenges, difficulties, or problems that a person may face in their life.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expresses his amazement at those who possess the knowledge of the cure for their afflictions but fail to seek it. This highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance in order to overcome the challenges and difficulties that we encounter in our lives. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages us to seek knowledge in the Quran in Surah Al-Zumar, verse 9:

Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

Furthermore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions that even if one happens to find the remedy, they do not apply it to cure their ailment. This highlights the importance of taking action and implementing the knowledge that we possess. Merely having knowledge without applying it in our lives is futile. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of action in the Quran in Surah Al-Asr, verse 3:

Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and advise each other to truth and advise each other to patience.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) amazement at those who possess knowledge but fail to seek the remedy or apply it highlights the consequences of such negligence. By neglecting to seek the remedy, individuals prolong their suffering and fail to find relief from their afflictions. This can lead to further complications and hardships in their lives. Similarly, by failing to apply the remedy, individuals miss out on the opportunity to find a cure and alleviate their suffering.

Reflecting on this hadith, we can draw parallels to our spiritual and physical well-being. Just as we seek medical treatment for physical ailments, we must also seek spiritual remedies for the ailments of our souls. This can be achieved through seeking knowledge, understanding, and implementing the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ().

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening Hadith in this hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to actively seek the remedies for their ailments, both physical and spiritual. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and implementing it in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to seek and apply the remedies for our afflictions, and may He alleviate our suffering and grant us peace and well-being.
