اَلإكْثارُ إضْجارٌ۔
Excessive speech is annoying.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الإكْثارُ إضْجارٌ۔" This can be translated into English as,
Excessive speech is annoying.
Let us delve into the profound wisdom behind this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (ikthar) "إكْثارُ" in this Hadith refers to an abundance or excessiveness in speech. It implies talking excessively without purpose or necessity. Such behavior can be burdensome and irritating to others. The word (idjar) "إضْجارٌ" refers to annoyance or irritation caused by excessive speech.
The Quran provides guidance on the importance of controlling our speech and being mindful of its impact on others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking in a manner that is beneficial and conducive to harmony. It encourages us to choose our words wisely and avoid unnecessary arguments or disputes. Excessive speech, which often leads to misunderstandings and conflicts, goes against the teachings of the Quran.
Furthermore, the Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10-11),
Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two-thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allah determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur'an.
This verse highlights the importance of moderation in our actions, including speech. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions were engaged in worship for a significant portion of the night, yet even they were advised to recite what is easy for them. This teaches us the value of balance and avoiding excessive speech or actions that may lead to exhaustion or neglect of other important responsibilities.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement regarding excessive speech being annoying serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of the impact of their words. When we engage in excessive speech, we not only burden ourselves but also create discomfort for those around us. It disrupts the tranquility of our interactions and can strain relationships.
Excessive speech can lead to misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and even conflicts. It distracts us from focusing on meaningful conversations and productive endeavors. By restraining our speech and speaking only when necessary and beneficial, we can foster an environment of peace, understanding, and unity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of moderation in speech through this Hadith. His words echo the teachings of the Quran, reminding us to be mindful of the impact of our words and to strive for balance in all aspects of our lives.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to control our speech, to speak with purpose and kindness, and to avoid excessive speech that may cause annoyance or harm. May we strive to follow the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the teachings of the Quran in all aspects of our lives.
