(Ghurar al-Hikam: Virtues And Vices)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of consolidating virtues and merits by performing acts of kindness towards free individuals and showing generosity to those who possess virtuous qualities. To fully comprehend the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of its key words.
The word (fadhil) "فَضْلِ" refers to excellence, virtue, or merit. It encompasses all the good qualities and actions that elevate a person's status in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The consolidation or gathering of these merits implies the accumulation and preservation of these virtuous qualities.
The term (istina'i) "اصْطِناعِ" means to construct or build. In the context of this Hadith, it signifies the act of actively creating and cultivating virtuous actions and qualities within oneself. It emphasizes the importance of intentional effort and conscious choice in developing and maintaining good character.
The word (hurr) "حُرِّ" refers to a freeman or a person who is free from the bonds of slavery. In the broader sense, it encompasses individuals who are free in terms of their social status, economic independence, or personal autonomy. By highlighting the importance of doing good to the freeman, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of treating all individuals, regardless of their social standing, with kindness and respect.
Furthermore, the phrase (ahl al-khayr) "أهْلِ الخَيْرِ" refers to the people of virtue or goodness. These are individuals who possess noble qualities, righteousness, and piety. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to be generous and kind towards such individuals, recognizing and appreciating their virtuous actions and qualities.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of performing acts of kindness, generosity, and maintaining good character. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177, Allah says:
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.
This verse emphasizes the importance of giving wealth and performing acts of kindness towards various categories of people, including the needy and the slaves. It highlights the significance of generosity and kindness as essential components of righteousness.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Ma'un, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense? For that is the one who drives away the orphan and does not encourage the feeding of the poor. So woe to those who pray but are heedless of their prayer - those who make show [of their deeds] and withhold [simple] assistance.
This verse condemns those who neglect the orphans and fail to provide assistance to the poor. It emphasizes the importance of not only performing acts of worship but also actively engaging in acts of kindness and charity.
Reflecting upon these Quranic verses and the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand that the consolidation of merits lies in actively building and cultivating virtuous qualities within ourselves. It involves performing acts of kindness and generosity towards all individuals, regardless of their social status or personal virtues. By doing so, we not only accumulate virtues but also contribute to the betterment of society and the fulfillment of our duties as Muslims.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to actively engage in acts of kindness and generosity towards all individuals, regardless of their social standing or personal virtues. It emphasizes the importance of consolidating virtues and merits by actively building and cultivating good character within ourselves. By doing so, we not only accumulate virtues but also contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these teachings and consolidate our merits through acts of kindness and generosity.
