In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العاقلُ من سَلَّمَ إلَى القَضاءِ، وعَمِلَ بِالحَزْمِ
which translates to
The intelligent person is one who submits to the decree [of Allah] and acts with judiciousness [and determination].
This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the qualities of a truly wise individual.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (sallama) "سَلَّمَ" means to submit or surrender. It signifies complete acceptance and resignation to the divine decree of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (al-qada) "القَضاءِ" refers to the divine decree or predestination of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses all events and circumstances that occur in our lives, whether they are perceived as favorable or unfavorable.
Furthermore, the word (amila) "عَمِلَ" means to act or perform. It implies taking practical steps and engaging in righteous deeds. The word (al-hazm) "الحَزْمِ" refers to judiciousness, determination, and firmness in one's actions. It signifies making decisions based on wisdom and adhering to them steadfastly.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286: (2:286)
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...
This verse reminds us that Allah's decree is based on His infinite knowledge and wisdom. He knows our capabilities and burdens us only with what we can handle. Therefore, submitting to His decree is an act of intelligence and wisdom.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 78, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (22:78)
And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty...
This verse emphasizes the importance of acting with determination and firmness in our pursuit of righteousness. It encourages us to face challenges and obstacles with unwavering resolve, knowing that Allah has not burdened us with more than we can handle.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that true intelligence lies in accepting and embracing Allah's decree, even when it may be difficult or contrary to our desires. It teaches us to trust in Allah's wisdom and to have faith that everything that happens in our lives is ultimately for our own benefit. By submitting to His decree, we align ourselves with His divine plan and find peace and contentment in knowing that He is in control.
Furthermore, the Hadith emphasizes the importance of taking action and making decisions with wisdom and determination. It reminds us that intelligence is not merely theoretical knowledge, but rather the practical application of that knowledge in our lives. We must strive to make choices that are in line with the teachings of Islam and act upon them with firmness and determination.
For example, if a person faces a difficult situation or a loss, they should submit to Allah's decree and trust that He has a greater plan in place. They should not despair or question His wisdom, but rather seek solace and strength in their faith. At the same time, they should take practical steps to overcome the challenges they face, making decisions based on wisdom and determination.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true intelligence lies in submitting to the decree of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and acting with judiciousness and determination. It reminds us to trust in Allah's wisdom and to have faith in His plan for us. By aligning our actions with His teachings and making decisions based on wisdom, we can navigate through the challenges of life and attain true success and contentment.
