The best good deed is coming to the aid of the aggrieved.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best good deed is coming to the aid of the aggrieved.
This enlightening saying emphasizes the importance of helping those who are in distress, suffering, or oppressed. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its significance in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (ma'ruf) "مَعْرُوفِ" in this Hadith refers to acts of kindness, goodness, and righteousness. It encompasses all actions that are recognized as virtuous and beneficial in society. Coming to the aid of the aggrieved, or (ighathatul malhoof) "إغاثَةُ المَلْهُوفِ", refers to providing assistance, support, and relief to those who are oppressed, downtrodden, or in need.
The Quranic teachings emphasize the importance of helping those in distress and standing up against injustice. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2),
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
This verse highlights the significance of joining hands in acts of goodness and righteousness, including coming to the aid of the aggrieved.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Indeed, the believers are brothers. So make peace between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
This verse emphasizes the unity and brotherhood among Muslims and encourages them to reconcile conflicts and support one another. Coming to the aid of the aggrieved is a manifestation of this brotherhood, as it demonstrates compassion, empathy, and solidarity towards those who are suffering.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of this act as the best good deed. By helping those in need, we not only alleviate their suffering but also fulfill our duty as Muslims to establish justice and promote the well-being of society. This act of kindness has far-reaching consequences, as it creates a ripple effect of positivity and inspires others to follow suit.
When we come to the aid of the aggrieved, we not only alleviate their immediate suffering but also empower them to overcome their challenges. By extending a helping hand, we provide them with the support and resources they need to regain their dignity and rebuild their lives. This act of kindness can have a profound impact on the individual, their families, and the community as a whole.
Moreover, coming to the aid of the aggrieved is a reflection of the mercy and compassion that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah says,
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse reminds us of the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, which includes following their teachings of compassion and kindness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of coming to the aid of the aggrieved as the best good deed. This act of kindness aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which encourage Muslims to establish justice, promote unity, and alleviate the suffering of others. By extending our support to those in need, we not only fulfill our religious obligations but also contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice this noble act and be a source of relief and comfort for those who are aggrieved.
