مَنْ عَقَلَ سَمِحَ۔
One who has intelligence is kind [and tolerant].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ عَقَلَ سَمِحَ۔" which translates to
One who has intelligence is kind [and tolerant].
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (aqla) "عَقَلَ" in this Hadith refers to intelligence or intellect. It signifies the ability to reason, comprehend, and make sound judgments. It is a quality that distinguishes humans from other creatures and enables them to navigate through the complexities of life. Intelligence is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is meant to be utilized for the betterment of oneself and society.
The word (samih) "سَمِحَ" in this Hadith means kind or tolerant. It implies having a gentle and compassionate nature, showing patience and understanding towards others, and refraining from harshness or cruelty. It is a quality that fosters harmonious relationships, promotes unity, and creates an atmosphere of love and respect.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of knowing and understanding one another, regardless of our differences in race, ethnicity, or social status. It highlights the need for kindness, tolerance, and respect towards others, as these qualities are the true measure of nobility in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:256), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
This verse emphasizes the importance of religious tolerance and freedom of choice. It teaches us that true faith cannot be forced upon anyone, and that it is our duty to respect the beliefs and choices of others. It is through kindness and understanding that we can bridge the gaps between different faiths and foster a peaceful coexistence.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that intelligence and kindness are intertwined. A person of true intelligence understands the value of kindness and tolerance. They recognize that their intellect should be used to promote unity, harmony, and justice in society. They do not let their knowledge become a source of arrogance or superiority, but rather a means to uplift and guide others towards righteousness.
When we embody the qualities of intelligence and kindness, we become agents of positive change in our communities. We inspire others through our actions, words, and behavior. We create an environment where differences are celebrated, conflicts are resolved peacefully, and compassion reigns supreme.
Let us reflect upon this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to cultivate both intelligence and kindness within ourselves. Let us remember that true intelligence lies not only in acquiring knowledge but also in applying it with wisdom and compassion. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to understand and implement the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble Ahl al-Bayt.
