كَمْ مِنْ فَقِير يُفْتَقَرُ إلَيْهِ۔
How many a poor person is needed by someone else.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Pauper)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
كَمْ مِنْ فَقِير يُفْتَقَرُ إلَيْهِ۔
This can be translated as:
How many a poor person is needed by someone else.
In this impactful saying , Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws our attention to the reality that there are numerous individuals who are in need, yet they themselves are also needed by others. To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into its key words and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.
The word (faqeer) "فَقِير" refers to a person who is poor or in need. It encompasses not only financial poverty, but also encompasses those who are in need of various forms of assistance, such as emotional support, guidance, or companionship. The word (yuftaqaru) "يُفْتَقَرُ" is derived from the root word (faqara) "فَقَرَ", which means to become poor or to be in a state of need.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (Quran 76:8-9)
And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'
This verse highlights the importance of helping those in need, regardless of their social status or background. It emphasizes the selflessness and sincerity of those who give, seeking only the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Similarly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that even those who are poor or in need have something to offer to others.
In another verse, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (Quran 59:9)
And they give them preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
This verse emphasizes the virtue of selflessness and generosity, even in times of personal hardship. It encourages us to prioritize the needs of others over our own, recognizing that true success lies in giving and helping those who are in need. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) echoes this sentiment by reminding us that there are individuals who may be in need, but they also possess qualities or abilities that are needed by others.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can understand that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging us to recognize the inherent value and potential within every individual, regardless of their circumstances. Just as we are quick to seek assistance from those who are wealthy or influential, we should also acknowledge the contributions and wisdom that can be found in those who are in need.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for us to be humble and compassionate towards others, regardless of their social or economic status. It teaches us that everyone has something to offer, and that we should not overlook the potential for growth and learning that lies within those who are in need.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
How many a poor person is needed by someone else
highlights the importance of recognizing the value and potential within every individual, regardless of their circumstances. It encourages us to be compassionate, selfless, and to prioritize the needs of others. By doing so, we can create a society that is built upon empathy, understanding, and mutual support. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and to strive for excellence in our interactions with others.
