اِلْزَمِ الصِّدْقَ وإنْ خِفْتَ ضُرَّهُ فَإنَّهُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الكِذْبِ المَرْجُوِّ نَفْعُهُ۔

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and encourages Muslims to uphold this noble virtue, even in the face of potential harm. Let us delve into the exegesis of this thought-provoking Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (sidq) "صِدْقَ" in the Hadith refers to truthfulness, sincerity, and honesty. It is derived from the root word (sadaqa) "صَدَقَ", which means to be true or to confirm. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in the Quran. In Surah Al-Tawbah, Allah says, (Quran 9:119)

O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true

This verse highlights the significance of surrounding oneself with truthful individuals, as their company fosters righteousness and sincerity.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to (espouse truthfulness) "إِلْزَمِ الصِّدْقَ" in all aspects of their lives. This means that truthfulness should be a fundamental characteristic of a Muslim's speech, actions, and intentions. The Imam emphasizes that even if one fears harm or negative consequences, they should still adhere to truthfulness. This is because the benefits derived from truthfulness far outweigh the temporary gains obtained through lying.

To further understand the importance of truthfulness, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Ahzab, Allah says, (Quran 33:70-71)

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins

These verses highlight that speaking words of justice, which includes truthfulness, leads to the rectification of one's actions and the forgiveness of sins.

The Hadith also warns against the dangers of lying. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that lying is a deceptive act that may yield temporary benefits, but ultimately leads to disappointment and loss. This aligns with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah warns against falsehood and deceit. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 17:34-35)

And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned. And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even balance. That is the best [way] and best in result

These verses emphasize the importance of fulfilling commitments and being just in one's dealings, which includes refraining from lying or deceiving others.

By adhering to truthfulness, Muslims demonstrate their trustworthiness and integrity. This not only strengthens their relationships with others but also earns the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The consequences of truthfulness extend beyond this worldly life. In Surah Al-Ahzab, Allah says, (Quran 49:9)

Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly

This verse highlights that Allah's love is bestowed upon those who embody justice and truthfulness in their actions.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that truthfulness is a virtue that should be cherished and upheld by all Muslims. It is a quality that brings about numerous benefits in this life and the hereafter. By embracing truthfulness, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt. Let us strive to be people of truth, even in the face of adversity, for it is through truthfulness that we attain true success and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
