مَا زَنَى غَيُورٌ قَطُّ۔
A self-respecting man never commits adultery.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #305)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَا زَنَى غَيُورٌ قَطُّ۔
This can be translated as,
A self-respecting man never commits adultery.
Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (zina) "زَنَى" in Arabic refers to the act of adultery or fornication. It is a grave sin that goes against the sanctity of marriage and the moral fabric of society. The word (ghayyur) "غَيُورٌ" means a person who possesses a sense of honor, dignity, and protective jealousy. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing that a person who truly values their self-respect and honor would never engage in such immoral behavior.
This Hadith aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of chastity and the preservation of family values. In Surah Al-Isra, verse 32, Allah says,
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
This verse clearly prohibits any form of sexual relations outside the bounds of marriage.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur, verse 30, Allah states,
Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
This verse highlights the importance of modesty and self-control for men, reminding them to protect their chastity and refrain from any immoral acts.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to uphold their self-respect and honor by avoiding any form of adultery or fornication. It reflects the high moral standards that Islam sets for its followers.
Committing adultery not only violates the sanctity of marriage but also has severe consequences for individuals and society as a whole. It leads to the breakdown of families, the spread of diseases, and the erosion of trust and morality. By adhering to the teachings of Islam and avoiding such sinful acts, Muslims can maintain a healthy and harmonious society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and wisdom. His statement in this Hadith serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to protect their honor and dignity by abstaining from immoral acts. It encourages individuals to cultivate a sense of self-respect and to value the sanctity of marriage and family.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that a person of self-respect and honor would never engage in adultery. This aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of chastity and the preservation of family values. By adhering to these principles, Muslims can uphold their self-respect, protect their families, and contribute to a morally upright society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to follow the path of righteousness and protect us from the temptations of immorality.
