Hadith #6439

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إنَّ لِلآخِرِ بِالأوَّلِ مُزْدَجَراً۔

This can be translated as,

Verily for the latter there is an admonishment in the former.

Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (Akhir) "آخِرِ" refers to the latter or the last, while (Awwal) "أوَّلِ" refers to the former or the first. The word (Muzdajara) "مُزْدَجَراً" can be understood as admonishment, reproof, or a lesson to be learned. This Hadith highlights the connection between the past and the future, emphasizing that there are valuable lessons and admonishments to be found in the events and experiences of the past.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran of the importance of reflecting upon the lessons of the past. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 179, Allah says,

And there is for you in legal retribution [saving of] life, O you [people] of understanding, that you may become righteous.

This verse teaches us that the punishment for a crime serves as a lesson and a deterrent for others, thereby promoting righteousness and preventing further transgressions.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Hashr, verse 2, Allah states,

It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allah; but [the decree of] Allah came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision.

This verse recounts the expulsion of the disbelievers from their homes and highlights the consequences they faced due to their arrogance and false sense of security. It serves as a reminder to the believers to take heed and learn from the mistakes of those who came before them.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the importance of studying history and drawing lessons from it. By reflecting on the experiences of those who came before us, we can avoid repeating their mistakes and make informed decisions for the future.

For example, we can look at the story of Prophet Nuh (Noah) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the Quran. Despite his tireless efforts to guide his people, they persisted in their disbelief and were ultimately destroyed by the flood. This serves as a warning to us not to fall into the same patterns of disbelief and disobedience.

In another example, the story of the people of 'Ad in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 69, warns us against arrogance and transgression. They were a mighty nation, but their arrogance led to their downfall. Allah says,

Do you build on every height a sign, amusing yourselves, and take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally?

This verse reminds us that worldly possessions and material wealth are temporary, and true success lies in humility and obedience to Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement encourages us to reflect on the lessons of the past and apply them to our present and future. By learning from the mistakes and successes of those who came before us, we can navigate the challenges of life with wisdom and make choices that lead to righteousness and success.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that there are valuable admonishments and lessons to be learned from the events and experiences of the past. By reflecting on the stories and examples in the Quran, we can gain insight and guidance for our own lives.
