أشْرَفُ الشَّرَفِ العِلمُ۔
The most honourable of honours is knowledge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Honour And The Honourable)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The most honourable of honours is knowledge.
Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word "ashraf" in Arabic means "the most noble" or "the most honourable." It signifies the highest level of distinction and excellence. The word "sharaf" is derived from the root "sh-r-f," which conveys the idea of elevation and dignity. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that knowledge holds the utmost position of honor and nobility.
To understand the significance of knowledge, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes its value. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant. It emphasizes that knowledge elevates a person's status and grants them a higher level of understanding and insight.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge by degrees.
This verse highlights that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It is through knowledge that individuals are raised in ranks and granted spiritual growth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also sheds light on the importance of seeking knowledge. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah asks,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This rhetorical question emphasizes the superiority of those who seek knowledge over those who remain ignorant. It encourages Muslims to strive for knowledge and to continuously seek understanding.
The pursuit of knowledge is not limited to religious matters alone. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah praises those who possess knowledge and understanding in worldly affairs, saying,
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good.
This verse highlights that knowledge encompasses various fields and disciplines, and its acquisition brings immense benefit to individuals and society as a whole.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with knowledge. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah asks,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This question implies that those who possess knowledge have a greater responsibility to act upon it and guide others. Knowledge should not be hoarded or used for personal gain but should be shared for the betterment of society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified the embodiment of knowledge. His deep understanding of the Quran and his profound wisdom are well-known among Muslims. He was known as the "Gate of Knowledge" due to his extensive knowledge in various fields, including theology, jurisprudence, and ethics. His knowledge was not limited to theoretical understanding but was accompanied by practical application, as he implemented justice and wisdom during his rule.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the unparalleled honor and nobility of knowledge. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge, both religious and worldly, and the responsibility that comes with it. Muslims are encouraged to strive for knowledge, act upon it, and share it for the betterment of themselves and society. May Allah grant us the ability to seek knowledge and benefit from it, and may He elevate our status through the pursuit of knowledge.
