(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الصَّاحِبُ كالرُّقعَةِ فَاتَّخِذْهُ مُشاكِلاً۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

A companion is like a patch [of cloth], so take one that matches [yours].

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (sahib) "صَّاحِبُ" refers to a companion or an associate. It signifies someone with whom we have a close relationship, someone who accompanies us on our journey through life. The word (ruqa'ah) "رُّقعَةِ" means a patch or a piece of cloth used to mend or repair something. It symbolizes the role of a companion in our lives, someone who can mend our flaws and strengthen our weaknesses.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) compares a companion to a patch and advises us to choose one that matches our own. This analogy emphasizes the importance of selecting companions who are compatible with our values, beliefs, and aspirations. Just as a patch should be of the same fabric and color as the garment it is mending, a companion should share similar virtues, principles, and goals as us.

The Quran supports this concept of choosing righteous companions in several verses. In Surah Al-Kahf (18:28), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.

This verse highlights the importance of surrounding ourselves with individuals who are devoted to the worship of Allah and seek His pleasure.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse emphasizes the significance of being in the company of those who obey Allah and His Messenger, as it strengthens our faith and resolve.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to reflect on the impact our companions have on our character, actions, and spiritual growth. Choosing companions who possess qualities such as piety, knowledge, honesty, and kindness can inspire us to strive for excellence in our own lives. Conversely, associating with individuals who engage in sinful behavior, spread negativity, or lack moral values can lead us astray and hinder our progress towards righteousness.

Let us consider an example to further understand the significance of this Hadith. Imagine a person who is striving to improve their prayer and maintain consistency in their worship. If they surround themselves with companions who are also dedicated to their prayers, they will find encouragement, motivation, and guidance from their companions. They will witness the beauty of prayer through their companions' devotion and be inspired to strengthen their own connection with Allah.

On the other hand, if this person chooses companions who neglect their prayers or engage in sinful activities, they may find themselves influenced by their companions' behavior. Their commitment to prayer may waver, and they may struggle to resist the negative peer pressure. This example illustrates the profound impact that companions can have on our spiritual journey.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of carefully selecting our companions. Just as a patch should match the fabric it mends, our companions should align with our values and aspirations. The Quranic verses mentioned support this concept, emphasizing the significance of surrounding ourselves with righteous individuals who inspire and uplift us. By choosing companions who share our commitment to righteousness, we can strengthen our faith, enhance our character, and strive towards spiritual excellence. May Allah guide us in selecting companions who bring us closer to Him and grant us the wisdom to be righteous companions to others.
