Hadith #9731

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Lamurotatan kaltanazzuhi 'ani alma athimi.

This Hadith can be translated as,

There is no magnanimity like keeping clear of sins.

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word "lamurotatan" refers to magnanimity or nobility of character. It signifies the quality of being generous, honorable, and virtuous. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the highest form of magnanimity is achieved through "tanazzuh," which means to keep clear or abstain from sins. The Quran provides numerous verses that support the concept of abstaining from sins as a form of magnanimity. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of refraining from mocking, insulting, or belittling others. It teaches us that true magnanimity lies in treating others with respect and dignity, regardless of their social status or gender. By abstaining from such negative behaviors, we demonstrate our commitment to righteousness and elevate our character.

Another verse that supports the concept of keeping clear of sins is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:32), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding immoral actions, particularly in the realm of sexual relations. By refraining from engaging in unlawful sexual activities, we demonstrate our commitment to purity and righteousness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the significance of abstaining from sins as a means of achieving true magnanimity.
