Hadith #5820

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Silence is the sign of nobility and the fruit of intelligence.

This impactful saying highlights the virtues of silence and its correlation with nobility and intelligence.

Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (silence) "صَمْتُ" refers to refraining from speech or remaining quiet. It is a deliberate act of withholding one's words. (sign) "آيَةُ" signifies a symbol or indication that represents a particular quality or characteristic. (nobility) "نُبْلِ" refers to a high moral character, dignity, and honor. It encompasses traits such as patience, humility, and self-control. (fruit) "ثَمَرَةُ" signifies the outcome or result of a particular action. And finally, (intelligence) "عَقْلِ" refers to the ability to reason, understand, and make sound judgments.

To understand the significance of silence as a sign of nobility and the fruit of intelligence, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199),

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

This verse encourages Muslims to avoid engaging in futile arguments or debates with those who lack knowledge or understanding. Instead, we are advised to remain silent and distance ourselves from ignorance. This silence is a manifestation of our nobility and intelligence, as it demonstrates our ability to discern when it is appropriate to speak and when it is better to remain silent.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan (25:63), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the characteristics of the servants of the Most Merciful, stating,

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to ignorance and hostility with peace and tranquility. By choosing silence and responding with kind words, we demonstrate our nobility and intelligence, as we rise above the negativity and maintain our composure.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound impact of silence on our character and intellect.
