Renunciation of worldly pleasures is affluence.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Renunciation Of Worldly Pleasures)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Renunciation of worldly pleasures is affluence.

This concise statement holds deep wisdom and guidance for Muslims seeking a deeper understanding of the concept of zuhd (renunciation) and its significance in our lives.

To fully comprehend the meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words used by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The word "zuhd" refers to the act of abstaining from worldly desires and attachments. It signifies a detachment from material possessions, wealth, and the pursuit of worldly pleasures. The transliteration of "zuhd" is an important term to remember as it encapsulates the essence of this Hadith.

To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 201:

And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.

This verse highlights the importance of not being deceived by the allure of worldly possessions and the eloquence of those who seek to distract us from the path of righteousness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf, Ayah 46, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us,

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse emphasizes the transient nature of worldly possessions and encourages us to prioritize the pursuit of righteous deeds that will benefit us in this life and the Hereafter.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that renouncing worldly pleasures does not imply complete abandonment of our responsibilities or a life of asceticism. Rather, it calls for a balanced approach to material possessions and desires. It urges us to detach ourselves from the excessive love and attachment to worldly possessions, recognizing that true affluence lies in contentment and spiritual growth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that by renouncing worldly pleasures, we free ourselves from the distractions that hinder our spiritual progress. This renunciation allows us to focus on our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the pursuit of righteous deeds. It helps us cultivate qualities such as gratitude, humility, and self-discipline, which are essential for spiritual growth.

By prioritizing the eternal rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over temporary worldly pleasures, we align ourselves with the true purpose of our existence. We become more conscious of our actions, seeking to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rather than seeking validation or fulfillment through material possessions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual growth and to detach themselves from excessive love for worldly pleasures. By renouncing these temporary attachments, we attain true affluence in the form of contentment, spiritual growth, and a closer relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and to seek true affluence in the Hereafter.
