Hadith #9222

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ لَمْ تُقَوِّمْهُ الكَرامَةُ قَوَّمَتْهُ الإهانَةُ۔

This amazing Hadith highlights the significance of self-respect and dignity in shaping an individual's behavior and character. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to understand its implications and teachings.

The word (karāmatu) "كَرَامَةُ" refers to high esteem, honor, and dignity. It encompasses the sense of self-worth and respect that every human being deserves. When a person lacks self-respect and allows themselves to be subjected to indignity, it diminishes their character and weakens their moral compass.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of self-respect and dignity in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights that true nobility and honor are not based on worldly status or lineage but on righteousness and piety. It emphasizes that the measure of a person's worth lies in their character, their adherence to moral values, and their relationship with Allah. This aligns with the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the Hadith, where he emphasizes the importance of being set aright by high esteem.

Another verse that complements the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:70), where Allah says,

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.

This verse reminds us that Allah has bestowed honor upon all human beings by virtue of their creation. It is a reminder that every individual possesses inherent worth and dignity, regardless of their worldly accomplishments or social standing. This honor comes with the responsibility to uphold one's self-respect and treat others with dignity and respect.
