اَلْعَمَلُ بِطاعَةِ اللّهِ أرْبَحُ۔
The action done in obedience to Allah is more profitable.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العمل بطاعة الله أربح
which translates to
The action done in obedience to Allah is more profitable.
In this impactful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the immense value and benefit of performing actions that are in accordance with the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and concepts it presents. The word (amal) "عمل" refers to any action or deed performed by an individual. It encompasses both physical acts as well as intentions and thoughts. It is a comprehensive term that encompasses all aspects of human behavior.
The phrase (bi-ta'atillah) "بطاعة الله" refers to obedience to Allah. It signifies willingly submitting to the commands and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of life. It encompasses following the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and adhering to the principles of righteousness and justice.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the superiority and profitability of actions performed in obedience to Allah. This means that when we align our actions with the divine will, we not only gain spiritual rewards but also experience tangible benefits in this world and the hereafter. Our actions become more meaningful, purposeful, and fruitful.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:277),
Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakah will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
This verse emphasizes the importance of combining faith with righteous actions, which leads to abundant rewards from Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights the significance of righteousness as the criterion for superiority in the sight of Allah.
When we reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that performing actions in obedience to Allah not only brings us closer to Him but also leads to numerous benefits in our lives. By aligning our actions with the divine guidance, we attain peace, contentment, and success in this world and the hereafter.
For example, when we engage in acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, and charity, we strengthen our connection with Allah and experience a sense of tranquility and fulfillment. These actions purify our hearts, increase our faith, and bring us closer to attaining the ultimate goal of Paradise.
Similarly, when we adhere to the moral and ethical teachings of Islam in our interactions with others, we build strong and harmonious relationships. Our honesty, kindness, and compassion towards others create a positive impact on society and contribute to the betterment of humanity as a whole.
Conversely, when we neglect obedience to Allah and engage in actions that are contrary to His commandments, we not only distance ourselves from Him but also invite negative consequences into our lives. Our actions become devoid of blessings and can lead to spiritual emptiness, dissatisfaction, and even harm to ourselves and others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the immense value and profitability of performing actions in obedience to Allah. By aligning our actions with His commandments, we not only gain spiritual rewards but also experience tangible benefits in this world and the hereafter. Let us strive to make our actions a reflection of our faith and seek the pleasure of Allah in all that we do. May Allah guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this life and the hereafter.
