Allah, the Glorified, does not give a servant anything from the good of this world or the Hereafter but because of his good character and his good intention.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of good character and intention in attaining the blessings of both this world and the Hereafter. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to understand its connotation and significance.
The key words in this Hadith are (good of this world and the Hereafter) "خَيْرِ الدُّنيا والآخرَةِ", (good character) "حُسْنِ خُلْقِهِ", and (good intention) "حُسْنِ نِيَّتِهِ".
When we speak of the
good of this world and the Hereafter,
it refers to the blessings and rewards that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His servants. These blessings can be material wealth, health, knowledge, success, and most importantly, spiritual growth and salvation in the Hereafter.
The phrase (good character) "حُسْنِ خُلْقِهِ" encompasses a person's moral conduct, behavior, and disposition. It refers to the qualities of kindness, honesty, patience, humility, forgiveness, and other virtuous traits that a person possesses. Good character is not limited to how one treats others, but it also includes how one conducts themselves in their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The phrase (good intention) "حُسْنِ نِيَّتِهِ" highlights the importance of having pure and sincere intentions in all our actions. It means that our intentions should be solely for the sake of pleasing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His pleasure. When our intentions are pure, our actions become a means of worship and are elevated in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To further understand the significance of good character and intention, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13):
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that the most honorable and noble individuals in the sight of Allah are those who possess righteousness and piety. It is not one's wealth, lineage, or worldly achievements that define their worth, but rather their character and their relationship with Allah.
Another verse that supports the Hadith is Surah Al-Qasas (28:77):
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
This verse reminds us that while we strive for the Hereafter, we should not neglect our responsibilities and duties in this world. We should use the blessings and resources bestowed upon us by Allah to do good, to help others, and to contribute positively to society. This can only be achieved through good character and intention.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims that the path to success and prosperity, both in this world and the Hereafter, lies in cultivating good character and having sincere intentions. It teaches us that our actions should be driven by a desire to please Allah and benefit others, rather than seeking personal gain or recognition.
When we embody good character and intention, we become a source of positivity and inspiration for those around us. Our interactions with others become a means of spreading love, compassion, and righteousness. Moreover, our good character and intention become a reflection of our faith and devotion to Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of good character and intention in attaining the blessings of both this world and the Hereafter. It reminds us that our actions should be guided by sincerity and a desire to please Allah. By embodying good character and intention, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute positively to society and become a source of inspiration for others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate and maintain good character and intention in all aspects of our lives.
