لا خازِنَ أفْضَلُ مِنَ الصَّمْتِ۔
There is no treasurer [and protector of secrets] better than silence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Silence)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لا خازِنَ أفْضَلُ مِنَ الصَّمْتِ۔
This translates to,
There is no treasurer [and protector of secrets] better than silence.
Let us delve into the profound wisdom and guidance contained within this statement, in light of the teachings of the Quran.
The word (khazin) "خازِنَ" in the Hadith refers to a treasurer or guardian. It implies someone who is entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding valuable possessions or secrets. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the significance of silence as the most effective means of preserving and protecting secrets.
The Quran also emphasizes the importance of guarding one's tongue and being cautious with words. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:3),
Successful indeed are the believers, those who offer their Salah (prayers) with humility and full submissiveness, and those who turn away from Al-Laghw (dirty, false, evil, vain talk, falsehood, and all that Allah has forbidden).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:55), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.'
These verses highlight the importance of avoiding idle talk, falsehood, and engaging in unnecessary discussions. Muslims are encouraged to be mindful of their speech and to refrain from spreading rumors or divulging secrets. By doing so, they protect themselves from sin and maintain the trust and confidence of others.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes the significance of silence as a means of preserving secrets and maintaining trust. Silence acts as a barrier against the leakage of confidential information, preventing harm and maintaining the sanctity of relationships. It allows individuals to be trustworthy and reliable, qualities that are highly valued in Islam.
Silence also serves as a means of self-control and discipline. It enables individuals to reflect upon their thoughts and intentions before speaking, ensuring that their words are beneficial and in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:205),
And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.
By practicing silence, Muslims can cultivate a sense of mindfulness and awareness, allowing them to align their speech with the principles of Islam. This not only benefits the individual but also contributes to a harmonious and respectful society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of silence as a means of protecting secrets and maintaining trust. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the significance of guarding one's tongue and being cautious with words. By practicing silence, Muslims can uphold the values of honesty, integrity, and self-discipline, ultimately leading to a more righteous and virtuous life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to embrace the virtue of silence and protect the secrets entrusted to us.
