— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Deficient)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

المنقوص مستور عنه عيبه

which translates to

The deficient one is he whose faults are hidden from him.

This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-awareness and recognizing one's own shortcomings.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by exploring the key words and concepts it presents. The word (manqoos) "منقوص" refers to someone who is lacking or deficient. It signifies a person who falls short in some aspect of their character or behavior. The term (mustoor) "مستور" means hidden or concealed. It implies that the faults of the deficient person are veiled from their own perception.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and knowledge. It warns against blindly following one's desires or opinions without seeking knowledge and understanding. The deficient person, as mentioned in the Hadith, lacks this self-awareness and fails to recognize their own faults.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

This verse highlights the fact that true guidance comes from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone. It is only through self-reflection and recognition of our own deficiencies that we can seek guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive to improve ourselves.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to engage in introspection and self-evaluation. It urges us to be humble and acknowledge our weaknesses and shortcomings. By doing so, we can embark on a journey of self-improvement and seek guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to rectify our flaws.

The consequences of failing to recognize our own faults can be detrimental. It leads to arrogance, ignorance, and a lack of personal growth. Such individuals become complacent and are unable to rectify their behavior or seek forgiveness for their mistakes. They remain stagnant in their spiritual journey and fail to reach their full potential as Muslims.

On the other hand, those who are self-aware and recognize their deficiencies are motivated to strive for self-improvement. They actively seek knowledge, guidance, and repentance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They are open to constructive criticism and are willing to rectify their mistakes. This self-awareness leads to personal growth, spiritual development, and a stronger connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be self-aware and recognize their own faults. It encourages us to engage in self-reflection, seek knowledge, and actively strive for self-improvement. By acknowledging our deficiencies and seeking guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can rectify our behavior, grow spiritually, and become better Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and humility to recognize our faults and the strength to rectify them.
