(Ghurar al-Hikam: Judiciousness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ أخَذَ بِالحَزْمِ اِسْتَظْهَرَ۔

This can be translated as,

One who acts judiciously is cautious.

Let us delve into the deeper meanings and implications of this thought-provoking Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (hazm) "حَزْمِ" in this Hadith refers to acting with determination, decisiveness, and firmness. It signifies the ability to make wise and well-thought-out decisions, taking into account the consequences of one's actions. It implies being resolute and steadfast in upholding what is right and just.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9),

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse emphasizes the importance of acting with justice and fairness, even in times of conflict. It encourages believers to strive for reconciliation and to establish justice as a means of resolving disputes. By acting judiciously, one not only upholds the principles of justice but also earns the love and pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse highlights the importance of standing firm for justice and not allowing personal biases or animosities to cloud one's judgment. It urges Muslims to be just and fair, even if it means going against the interests or desires of a particular group. Acting judiciously requires overcoming personal inclinations and aligning oneself with the principles of justice and righteousness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us of the importance of being cautious in our actions. It serves as a reminder that acting with determination and decisiveness should be accompanied by careful consideration of the potential consequences. By being cautious, we can avoid hasty decisions that may lead to negative outcomes or harm others unjustly.

For instance, when making decisions in matters of governance or leadership, a judicious approach ensures that the rights of individuals are protected, and the welfare of the community is upheld. It prevents the misuse of power and promotes fairness and equality.

Moreover, acting judiciously extends beyond individual actions to societal and global issues. It calls upon Muslims to advocate for justice, stand against oppression, and work towards the betterment of society as a whole. By acting with determination and caution, we can contribute to the establishment of a just and equitable world.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of acting judiciously and being cautious in our decisions and actions. It emphasizes the need to uphold justice, fairness, and righteousness, even in challenging circumstances. By aligning our actions with the principles of the Quran, we can strive to create a just and harmonious society, earning the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the process. May Allah guide us all to act judiciously and grant us the wisdom to make decisions that are pleasing to Him.
