Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالإحْسانِ تُمْلَكُ القُلُوبُ۔" This Hadith can be translated into English as,

Through kindness, hearts are owned.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the teachings of the Quran.

The word (ihsan) "إحْسانِ" in this Hadith refers to acts of kindness, goodness, and excellence. It encompasses going above and beyond what is expected, treating others with compassion, and showing generosity. It is a comprehensive term that encompasses both physical and moral acts of goodness.

The word (tumliku) "تُمْلَكُ" in this Hadith means to possess or own. It implies that through acts of kindness, one gains control or influence over the hearts of others. It highlights the power and impact of kindness in establishing strong and meaningful relationships with people.

The Quranic teachings emphasize the importance of kindness and its profound impact on human relationships. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83),

And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.

This verse highlights the obligation to do good to others, including parents, relatives, orphans, and the needy. It emphasizes the importance of speaking good words to people, which includes acts of kindness and benevolence. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duties towards others but also establish a positive and harmonious society.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:23), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

This verse emphasizes the importance of treating parents with kindness and respect, even in their old age. It teaches us to speak to them with noble words and to refrain from any form of disrespect or annoyance. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty towards our parents but also earn their love and affection.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the power of kindness in winning the hearts of others. When we treat others with kindness, we create a positive and loving environment that fosters strong relationships. Kindness has the ability to touch the hearts of people, melt their animosity, and inspire them to reciprocate with kindness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His actions and words were always guided by the principles of kindness and compassion. He treated people with respect and dignity, regardless of their social status or beliefs. His kindness was not limited to his friends and allies but extended even to his enemies.

By practicing kindness, we can transform our relationships and create a society built on love, compassion, and understanding. Kindness has the power to heal wounds, bridge gaps, and bring people closer together. It is a reflection of our faith and a means of attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that through acts of kindness, we can win the hearts of others. It reminds us of the importance of treating people with compassion, respect, and generosity. By practicing kindness, we not only fulfill our obligations towards others but also create a harmonious and loving society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be kind and compassionate towards others and grant us the ability to touch the hearts of people through our actions.
