Hadith #5444

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Lustful desires are fatal diseases, and the best cure for them is acquiring patience against them.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of unchecked desires and provides guidance on how to overcome them.

Let us first explore the key words in this Hadith. The Arabic word (shahawat) "شَهَوَاتُ" refers to lustful desires or passions. These desires can manifest in various forms, such as greed, gluttony, sexual desires, and other worldly cravings. The word (afatun) "آفَاتٌ" means fatal diseases or afflictions. Here, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) compares unchecked desires to diseases that can have severe consequences on our spiritual well-being.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then provides us with the solution to combat these destructive desires - (iqtina' al-sabr 'anha) "اِقْتِنَاءُ الصَّبْرِ عَنْهَا", which translates to acquiring patience against them. Patience, in this context, refers to self-restraint and the ability to control our desires. It is through patience that we can overcome the temptations that arise from our lustful inclinations.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of unchecked desires in several verses. In Surah Yusuf (12:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.

This verse emphasizes the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil desires, which can only be overcome through the mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Prophet Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) saying,

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking the Hereafter while not neglecting our worldly responsibilities. It reminds us to control our desires and not to indulge in corruption or sinful behavior.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that unchecked desires can lead us astray and harm our spiritual well-being. By acquiring patience and self-restraint, we can protect ourselves from the destructive consequences of these desires. This requires a conscious effort to control our thoughts, actions, and intentions, aligning them with the teachings of Islam.

Practicing patience against lustful desires not only safeguards our spiritual well-being but also has positive consequences in our daily lives. It helps us maintain healthy relationships, make wise decisions, and focus on our responsibilities. Moreover, it strengthens our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as we strive to please Him and seek His guidance in overcoming our desires.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of self-discipline and the need to constantly strive for self-improvement. It is through acquiring patience against our lustful desires that we can attain spiritual growth and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to overcome our desires and lead a righteous life.
