The best thing is gentleness.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Leniency And Gentleness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أفْضَلُ شَيْء الرِّفْقُ۔" This can be translated as,

The best thing is gentleness.

In this Hadith, the word (rifq) "رِّفْقُ" is of great significance. Rifq can be understood as gentleness, kindness, tenderness, or compassion. It encompasses the qualities of being soft-hearted, considerate, and lenient in one's dealings with others.

The importance of gentleness is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran, verse 159:

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

This verse highlights the importance of gentleness in the Prophet Muhammad's () interactions with his companions. Had he been harsh and rude, it would have driven people away from him. Instead, his leniency and kindness attracted people towards him, fostering a sense of unity and trust.

Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the virtue of gentleness in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 34:

And for every nation We have appointed rites which they perform. So, [O Muhammad], let the disbelievers not contend with you over the matter but invite them to your Lord. Indeed, you are upon straight guidance.

In this verse, Allah instructs the Prophet Muhammad () to invite people to Islam with gentleness and kindness, rather than engaging in arguments and contention. This approach of gentle persuasion is more likely to resonate with people and lead them towards the right path.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, understood the significance of gentleness in all aspects of life. He exemplified this quality in his interactions with people, whether they were his friends, family, or even his enemies. His gentleness and compassion were evident in his governance, his teachings, and his treatment of others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on gentleness serves as a reminder for all Muslims to adopt this noble trait in their daily lives. Gentleness allows us to build strong and harmonious relationships, resolve conflicts peacefully, and create an atmosphere of love and compassion within our communities.

When we approach others with gentleness, we are more likely to be heard and understood. It opens the doors for effective communication and fosters a sense of empathy and understanding. Gentleness also helps us to control our anger and respond to difficult situations with patience and wisdom.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that gentleness is the best way to interact with others. It is a quality that is praised in the Quran and exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt. By embodying gentleness in our words and actions, we can create a more compassionate and harmonious society, reflecting the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice gentleness in all aspects of our lives.
