(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Exteriors)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Uprightness of the exteriors is a symbol of the soundness of the inner consciences.

This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance of aligning our outward actions with the purity and sincerity of our hearts. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its key words and drawing upon relevant Quranic verses for a deeper understanding.

The word (salah) "صَلاحُ" in Arabic refers to righteousness, rectitude, and correctness. It encompasses the idea of being upright and virtuous in all aspects of life. It implies following the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and adhering to His commandments. The term (dhawahir) "ظَواهِرِ" refers to the outward appearances or actions that are visible to others. On the other hand, (damair) "ضَّمَائِرِ" refers to the inner consciences or the hidden aspects of our being.

To understand the significance of aligning our outward actions with the purity of our hearts, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes that true nobility and superiority lie in righteousness and piety, rather than in external appearances or worldly status. It highlights the importance of inner purity and sincerity, as it is the state of our hearts that truly matters to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Our actions should reflect the goodness and righteousness within us, serving as a testimony to the soundness of our inner consciences.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.

This verse highlights that righteousness is not limited to mere external acts of worship or rituals. Rather, it encompasses a comprehensive set of beliefs and actions that reflect the sincerity and devotion of a believer. It emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our obligations towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and towards our fellow human beings, demonstrating kindness, generosity, and integrity in all aspects of our lives.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that our outward actions should be a reflection of the purity and sincerity within us. It serves as a reminder that true righteousness lies in aligning our external behavior with the values and principles of Islam. When our actions are in harmony with our inner conscience, it not only brings about personal growth and spiritual development, but also inspires and influences those around us.

For instance, if we claim to be honest and upright, our actions should reflect this claim by refraining from deceit, fraud, and dishonesty. If we claim to be compassionate and caring, our actions should manifest in acts of kindness, charity, and support towards those in need. By aligning our outward behavior with the soundness of our inner consciences, we become beacons of light and guidance for others, inspiring them to follow the path of righteousness.

Conversely, if there is a disconnect between our outward actions and the purity of our hearts, it leads to hypocrisy and a loss of credibility. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:3),

That is because they believed, and then they disbelieved; so their hearts were sealed over, and they do not understand.

This verse highlights the consequences of hypocrisy, where individuals claim to believe but their actions contradict their words. Such hypocrisy leads to a hardening of the heart and a loss of understanding. Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to strive for consistency between their inner beliefs and their outward actions, ensuring that their hearts remain pure and their consciences sound.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to align their outward actions with the purity and sincerity of their hearts. It emphasizes the importance of righteousness and rectitude in all aspects of life, reminding us that true nobility lies in piety and devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By embodying the values and principles of Islam in our actions, we become beacons of guidance and inspiration for others, reflecting the soundness of our inner consciences. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to align our inward and outward selves, and may He bless us with sincerity and righteousness in all our endeavors.
