مَنْ غَشَّكَ في عَداوَتِهِ فَلاتَلُمْهُ وَلاتَعْذُلْهُ۔
When one deceives you out of his enmity [with you], then do not blame him or censure him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Rancor And Perfidy)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a thought-provoking Hadith that highlights the wisdom and noble character of the Imam. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its deeper meanings in light of the Quran.
The key word in this Hadith is (ghashshaka) "غَشَّكَ", which means to deceive or cheat someone. The word (adaawatih) "عَداوَتِهِ" refers to enmity or hostility. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us that when someone deceives us out of their enmity towards us, we should not blame or censure them. This teaching is rooted in the principles of patience, forgiveness, and maintaining good character.
The Quran provides guidance on similar situations and emphasizes the importance of responding to evil with goodness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Fussilat (41:34):
And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.
This verse encourages Muslims to respond to evil with acts of kindness and goodness. By doing so, we can potentially change the hearts of our enemies and turn them into friends. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice aligns perfectly with this Quranic teaching, as he advises us not to blame or censure those who deceive us out of their enmity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse emphasizes the importance of treating even those who are not Muslims with fairness and justice. It reminds us that our behavior towards others should be based on righteousness and justice, regardless of their actions towards us. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to not blame or censure those who deceive us out of enmity aligns with this Quranic principle of acting justly towards others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaching in this Hadith is a reflection of his immense knowledge and wisdom. He understood that responding to deceit and enmity with blame and censure only perpetuates negativity and escalates conflicts. Instead, he encourages Muslims to rise above such behavior and respond with patience, forgiveness, and kindness.
By choosing not to blame or censure those who deceive us out of enmity, we demonstrate our ability to control our emotions and maintain our composure. This approach has the potential to soften hearts, bridge gaps, and foster reconciliation. It is a manifestation of the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the importance of peace, forgiveness, and the pursuit of harmony.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us a valuable lesson in responding to deceit and enmity. It reminds us to rise above negativity and respond with patience, forgiveness, and kindness. By doing so, we not only uphold the principles of Islam but also contribute to the betterment of society and the promotion of peace. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to implement these teachings in our lives.
