Cheerfulness is the trait of the free.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Cheerful And Smiling)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "البشر شيمة الحر" which translates to
Cheerfulness is the trait of the free.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of cheerfulness and its association with freedom.
To understand the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (Bishr) "بشر" refers to cheerfulness, joy, and a positive disposition. It is a state of being content and happy. (Shimah) "شيمة" means a characteristic or trait that defines a person. And (Al-Hurr) "الحر" signifies freedom, independence, and liberation.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive and cheerful attitude. In Surah Al-Qasas, verse 77, Allah says,
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
This verse encourages Muslims to seek the rewards of the Hereafter while also enjoying the blessings of this world. It reminds us to be grateful for the provisions bestowed upon us by Allah and to use them for good. Maintaining a cheerful disposition allows us to appreciate the blessings of this world without becoming attached to them, as true freedom lies in detachment from worldly possessions.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 23, Allah says,
So that you may not despair over what has eluded you nor exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
This verse cautions against both despair and excessive pride. It teaches us to find a balance in our emotions and to remain cheerful regardless of our circumstances. True freedom lies in being content with what Allah has decreed for us and not allowing our emotions to be swayed by temporary setbacks or achievements.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the connection between cheerfulness and freedom. A person who possesses a cheerful disposition is free from the burdens of negativity, stress, and despair. They are not enslaved by their circumstances but rather rise above them with a positive outlook.
When we embody cheerfulness, we become free from the shackles of negativity and pessimism. We are able to face challenges with resilience and optimism. Our cheerful demeanor not only uplifts our own spirits but also has a positive impact on those around us. It fosters a sense of unity, harmony, and positivity within our communities.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and knowledge, understood the importance of maintaining a cheerful disposition. His own life serves as an example of how cheerfulness can empower an individual and inspire others. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) remained steadfast and optimistic, radiating a sense of tranquility and hope.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that cheerfulness is not only a desirable trait but also a characteristic of the free. By embodying cheerfulness, we free ourselves from the chains of negativity and become agents of positivity and inspiration. Let us strive to cultivate a cheerful disposition, drawing strength from the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the freedom of a cheerful heart.
