Thinking is the polish of the minds.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Thinking And The Thinker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Thinking is the polish of the minds.
This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the importance of intellectual reflection and contemplation. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "fikr" in Arabic refers to deep thought, reflection, and contemplation. It is the process of engaging the mind in a rational and analytical manner. The word "jala" means to polish or cleanse. Therefore, this Hadith teaches us that engaging in deep thought and contemplation is a means to purify and refine our minds.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of reflection and contemplation. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (3:190)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse highlights the signs of Allah's creation as a means for deep reflection and contemplation.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (30:8)
Do they not reflect upon themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers.
This verse urges us to reflect upon our own existence and the purpose of our creation.
The act of thinking and reflecting is not limited to the natural world. It extends to the realm of religious knowledge and understanding. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (39:41)
Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book for the people in truth. So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment. And you are not a manager over them.
This verse emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon the guidance provided in the Quran.
Now, let us reflect on the profound implications of Imam Ali's statement. Thinking and contemplation are essential for the development and refinement of our minds. When we engage in deep thought, we are able to critically analyze and understand the world around us. This leads to intellectual growth and the acquisition of knowledge.
Moreover, thinking allows us to ponder upon the signs of Allah's creation and recognize His wisdom and power. It enables us to appreciate the intricate balance and harmony in the universe. By contemplating the creation, we strengthen our faith and deepen our connection with Allah.
Furthermore, thinking helps us to understand and apply the teachings of Islam. It allows us to delve into the depths of religious knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of our faith. Through reflection, we can uncover the wisdom behind the commandments of Allah and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
The consequences of neglecting thinking and contemplation are detrimental. Without engaging our minds, we become stagnant and fail to grow intellectually and spiritually. We may fall into ignorance, misunderstanding, and misinterpretation of religious teachings. Our faith may become superficial and lacking in depth.
On the other hand, when we actively engage in deep thought and contemplation, we become more knowledgeable, wise, and discerning. We are able to make informed decisions and navigate through the complexities of life. Our understanding of Islam becomes profound and our faith becomes stronger.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that thinking is the polish of the minds. It emphasizes the importance of deep thought, reflection, and contemplation in refining and purifying our intellects. By engaging in intellectual reflection, we can acquire knowledge, strengthen our faith, and gain a deeper understanding of Islam. May Allah grant us the ability to think deeply and reflect upon His signs.
