(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Tongue)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

رُبَّ لِسان أتى عَلى إنْسان۔

This can be translated into English as,

Many a tongue destroys a person.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (lisān) "لِسان" in Arabic refers to the tongue, which is the organ of speech. It is through the tongue that we communicate our thoughts, ideas, and emotions. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that the tongue has the power to destroy a person. This destruction can occur through the misuse of speech, such as spreading lies, engaging in slander, or engaging in hurtful and offensive speech.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of guarding our tongues in the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of refraining from ridiculing, insulting, or using offensive language towards others. It reminds us that every individual has inherent worth and dignity, and we should treat others with respect and kindness. By doing so, we protect ourselves from the destructive consequences of our tongues.

Furthermore, the Quran also warns us about the consequences of spreading falsehood and engaging in slander. In Surah Al-Qalam (68:10-11), Allah says,

Indeed, those who have brought the falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment.

This verse reminds us that spreading falsehood and engaging in slander not only harms others but also brings punishment upon ourselves. It is a reflection of our own character and moral standing. Therefore, we must be cautious of the words we speak and ensure that they are truthful, beneficial, and in line with the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive power of the tongue to remind us of the responsibility we have in using our speech wisely. Our words have the potential to build bridges, foster understanding, and bring about positive change. Conversely, they can also cause division, harm relationships, and lead to regrettable consequences.

It is essential for us as Muslims to reflect on the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to control our tongues. We should speak the truth, avoid spreading falsehood, and refrain from engaging in hurtful speech. By doing so, we uphold the values of Islam, promote unity among Muslims, and contribute to a more harmonious society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the impact our words can have on ourselves and others. It urges us to be mindful of our speech, to use it for good, and to avoid the destructive consequences that can arise from the misuse of our tongues. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to guard our tongues and speak with kindness, truth, and compassion.
