Hadith #4475

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "ثَمَرةُ الرَّغْبَةِ التَّعَبُ۔" This can be translated as

The fruit of desire is hardship.

Let us delve into the essence of this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word "raghba" in Arabic refers to desire or longing for something. It represents the inclination of the heart towards a particular goal or objective. The word "ta'ab" means hardship or toil, which signifies the effort and struggle required to attain that desired goal. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the inherent connection between desire and the challenges that come with it.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of striving and exerting effort in the pursuit of righteous goals. Allah says in Surah Al-Insan (76:3):

Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.

This verse highlights that guidance is available to those who seek it, whether they choose to be grateful or ungrateful. The act of seeking guidance requires effort and determination.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), Allah says:

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse reminds us that Allah does not place a burden on us that is beyond our capacity. It implies that while hardships may arise in the pursuit of our desires, we have the strength and resilience to overcome them.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that the fulfillment of our desires often comes at a price. It requires perseverance, sacrifice, and determination. Just as a fruit grows through the laborious process of nurturing, watering, and protecting the tree, our desires also demand effort and endurance.

For example, if one desires knowledge, they must invest time and energy in studying, researching, and seeking guidance. If one desires success in their career, they must be prepared to work diligently, face challenges, and make sacrifices. If one desires a strong and loving family, they must invest time and effort in building and nurturing relationships.

The consequences of this Hadith are twofold. Firstly, it reminds us that we should be mindful of our desires and ensure that they align with the teachings of Islam. Our desires should be rooted in righteousness and should not lead us astray from the path of Allah. Secondly, it serves as a motivation to persevere in the face of hardships. We should not be discouraged by the challenges that arise in the pursuit of our desires, but rather embrace them as opportunities for growth and self-improvement.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we can draw inspiration from the life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself. Known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) faced numerous challenges and hardships throughout his life. Yet, his unwavering desire for justice, truth, and the betterment of society propelled him to overcome these obstacles and leave a lasting legacy.
