— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Schemer And Plotter)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Whoever schemes against people, Allah, the Glorified, turns his scheme back on him.

This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the divine justice of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the consequences of plotting against others.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (makara) "مَكَرَ" refers to scheming or plotting, while (an-nas) "النَّاسِ" means people. The term (rad) "رَدَّ" signifies the act of turning something back or returning it. And (makrah) "مَكْرَهُ" refers to the scheme or plot that is turned back upon the schemer.

To comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 30:

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.

This verse emphasizes that even when people scheme against the Prophet () or the believers, Allah's plan ultimately prevails. He is the ultimate planner, and His wisdom surpasses all human schemes.

Another verse that sheds light on the consequences of plotting against others is found in Surah Al-Ghashiyah, verse 17-18:

Then it is Our job to call them to account.

These verses highlight that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will hold people accountable for their actions and schemes. Those who plot against others will face the consequences of their own actions, as Allah's justice prevails.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that scheming against others is not only morally wrong but also futile. When someone plots against others, they are essentially going against the divine order and wisdom of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They may think they are being clever or gaining an advantage, but in reality, their schemes will be turned back upon them.

This Hadith also teaches us the importance of treating others with kindness, justice, and fairness. As Muslims, we are encouraged to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who exemplified these qualities in their interactions with others. By doing so, we not only uphold the teachings of Islam but also protect ourselves from the consequences of scheming against others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of Allah's divine justice and the consequences of plotting against others. It teaches us to rely on Allah's plan, as He is the best of planners. We should strive to treat others with kindness and fairness, avoiding any form of scheming or plotting. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the path of righteousness and protect us from the temptations of scheming against others.
