لِكُلِّ حَيّ داءٌ۔
For every living thing there is an ailment.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remedy And Ailment)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لِكُلِّ حَيّ داءٌ۔" which translates to
For every living thing there is an ailment.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights a universal truth that applies to all living beings, including humans, animals, and even plants.
To understand the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (hayy) "حَيّ" refers to any living being, encompassing all forms of life. It includes not only humans but also animals, insects, and even plants. The word (daa) "داء" means ailment or affliction, indicating any form of physical, emotional, or spiritual suffering that living beings experience.
This Hadith resonates with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the reality of suffering and trials in this world. Allah says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:2),
Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: 'We believe,' and will not be tested?
This verse reminds us that every living being, regardless of their faith or status, will face trials and tribulations in their lives.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that these afflictions serve a purpose in our spiritual growth and development. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155), Allah says,
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse highlights that the purpose of these trials is to test our patience and strengthen our faith.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that suffering is an inherent part of life. It serves as a means of purification and growth, allowing us to develop resilience, empathy, and compassion. Just as physical exercise strengthens our muscles, the challenges we face in life strengthen our character and deepen our connection with Allah.
Moreover, this Hadith encourages us to reflect on the universal nature of suffering. It reminds us that all living beings, including animals and plants, experience their own unique forms of affliction. This understanding should instill in us a sense of responsibility and compassion towards all creatures, as we are all part of Allah's creation.
For example, when we witness an animal in pain or distress, this Hadith reminds us that they too are experiencing their own form of ailment. It compels us to treat them with kindness and mercy, fulfilling our role as stewards of the Earth. Similarly, when we see a plant struggling to survive in harsh conditions, we are reminded of its inherent vulnerability and the need to care for it.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "لِكُلِّ حَيّ داءٌ۔" serves as a profound reminder of the universal nature of suffering in this world. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, emphasizing the purpose and benefits of trials and tribulations in our lives. This Hadith encourages us to develop empathy and compassion towards all living beings, recognizing their inherent vulnerability and the need to care for them. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to navigate through the challenges of life with patience and faith.
