فَقْدُ العَقْلِ شَقاءٌ۔
Lack of intellect is wretchedness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "فَقْدُ العَقْلِ شَقاءٌ۔" which translates to
Lack of intellect is wretchedness.
This wise utterance highlights the importance of intellect and knowledge in the life of a Muslim.
The word (intellect) "عَقْلِ" refers to the ability of a person to reason, understand, and make sound judgments. It encompasses the capacity to think critically, analyze situations, and make informed decisions. Intellect is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is a fundamental aspect of human existence.
The Hadith emphasizes that the absence or deficiency of intellect leads to (wretchedness) "شَقاءٌ". This term conveys a state of misery, unhappiness, and deprivation. It implies that a person who lacks intellect is deprived of the ability to navigate through life's challenges, make wise choices, and attain true happiness and success.
The importance of intellect is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:22)
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
This verse highlights that those who do not utilize their intellect are considered the lowest of creation in the sight of Allah.
Furthermore, the Quran encourages Muslims to seek knowledge and use their intellect to understand the signs of Allah's creation. In Surah Al-Ankabut, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 47:24)
Do they not then think deeply in the Quran, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)?
This verse urges Muslims to reflect upon the Quran and ponder over its verses, using their intellect to gain a deeper understanding of Allah's message.
The consequences of lacking intellect are far-reaching. Without intellect, individuals may fall into ignorance, superstition, and misguided beliefs. They may make impulsive decisions without considering the consequences, leading to personal and societal harm. Lacking intellect can also hinder one's ability to seek knowledge, engage in critical thinking, and contribute positively to their community.
On the other hand, possessing intellect brings numerous benefits. It enables individuals to seek knowledge, distinguish between right and wrong, and make informed choices. Intellect allows Muslims to understand the teachings of Islam, apply them in their lives, and contribute positively to society. It empowers individuals to navigate through the complexities of life, overcome challenges, and achieve success in both this world and the hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of intellect throughout his life. His enlightening Hadith in this Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to value and nurture their intellect. By seeking knowledge, engaging in critical thinking, and making informed decisions, Muslims can avoid the wretchedness that comes with lacking intellect and strive towards a life of happiness, success, and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of intellect in the life of a Muslim. Lacking intellect leads to wretchedness, while possessing intellect brings numerous benefits and enables individuals to navigate through life successfully. Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge, engage in critical thinking, and use their intellect to understand and apply the teachings of Islam. By doing so, they can avoid the pitfalls of ignorance and make wise choices that lead to happiness and success in both this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate and utilize our intellect for His sake.
