(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "سُنَّةُ الكِرامِ الجُودُ۔" which translates to

Generosity is the practice of the honourable.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us understand the important words in this Hadith. (sunnah) "سُنَّةُ" refers to a practice or way of life that is established and followed by individuals. (al-kiram) "الكِرامِ" refers to the honorable or noble ones, while (al-jood) "الجُودُ" means generosity.

The Quran emphasizes the virtue of generosity in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (2:57)

And spend of that with which We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, 'My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous.'

This verse highlights the importance of giving charity and being generous with our wealth before it is too late.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Insan, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the qualities of the righteous believers, saying, (76:8-9)

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'

This verse emphasizes the selflessness and sincerity in the act of giving, without expecting anything in return.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully encapsulates the essence of generosity. It teaches us that generosity is not merely an act, but a way of life followed by the honorable individuals. It is a practice that reflects the noble character and high moral standards of the believers.

When we look at the life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we find numerous examples of his unparalleled generosity. He would often give away his wealth and possessions to those in need, without expecting anything in return. His generosity extended to all, regardless of their social status or religious affiliation.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) generosity was not limited to material possessions. He was also generous with his knowledge and wisdom. He would patiently answer the questions of the people, guiding them towards the path of righteousness. His knowledge was a source of enlightenment for the ummah, and he generously shared it for the betterment of society.

The practice of generosity has far-reaching consequences. It not only benefits the recipients of our generosity but also purifies our own souls. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises great rewards for those who are generous. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:245)

Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.

This verse highlights the concept of giving as a loan to Allah, with the assurance that He will multiply our rewards manifold.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we are reminded of the importance of generosity in our lives. It is not merely an act of giving, but a way of embodying the noble qualities of the honorable ones. By practicing generosity, we emulate the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (), the Ahl al-Bayt, and the righteous companions.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to be generous and may He accept our acts of generosity. May we strive to follow the sunnah of the honorable ones and seek their intercession on the Day of Judgment.
