أبْعَدُ النّاسِ عَنِ الصَّلاحِ المُسْتَهْتَرُ بِاللَّهْوِ۔
The furthest of all people from righteousness is one who is [excessively] fond of amusement.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Amusement)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The furthest of all people from righteousness is one who is excessively fond of amusement.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of indulging in excessive amusement and entertainment, as it can lead them away from the path of righteousness.
Let us delve deeper into the important words used in this Hadith. The word (salah) "صَلاحِ" refers to righteousness, goodness, and rectitude. It encompasses all actions and behaviors that are in accordance with the teachings of Islam and pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (mustahtar) "مُسْتَهْتَرُ" comes from the root word (hatara) "هَتَرَ", which means to be excessively fond of or engrossed in something. In this context, it refers to being excessively fond of amusement and entertainment.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-An'am, verse 32:
And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah, so will you not reason?
This verse highlights the transient nature of worldly pleasures and emphasizes the importance of focusing on the eternal life in the Hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the mindset of those who are excessively fond of amusement and entertainment. He says in verse 6-7:
No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning. No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.
These verses from the Quran shed light on the consequences of being excessively engrossed in worldly amusements. Such a mindset can lead to a spiritual decline, as the heart becomes stained with worldly desires and distractions. It creates a barrier between the individual and their Lord, preventing them from attaining true righteousness and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the dangers of excessive amusement. He reminds us that those who prioritize worldly pleasures over their spiritual development are the furthest from righteousness. This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to strike a balance between enjoying permissible amusements and fulfilling their religious obligations.
Excessive indulgence in amusement can lead to neglecting acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and charity. It can also distract individuals from seeking knowledge, engaging in acts of kindness, and fulfilling their responsibilities towards their families and society. The consequences of such neglect can have far-reaching effects on one's spiritual well-being and overall character development.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should ask ourselves whether we are striking a balance between our worldly pursuits and our religious obligations. Are we prioritizing our spiritual growth and righteousness over excessive amusement and entertainment? It is essential to remember that Islam encourages moderation in all aspects of life, including our leisure activities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of excessive amusement and entertainment. It warns us about the potential consequences of neglecting our religious obligations and becoming engrossed in worldly pleasures. By striking a balance between our worldly pursuits and our spiritual development, we can ensure that we are on the path of righteousness and closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from being excessively fond of amusement.
