(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أيْنَ الَّذينَ بَلَغُوا مِنَ الدُّنْيا أقاصِيَ الهِمَمِ؟!

which translates to

Where are those who attained their highest ambitions in this world?

This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) invites us to reflect upon the pursuit of our worldly desires and ambitions.

The word (aqasiya) "أقاصِيَ" in the Hadith refers to the highest limits or peaks. It implies reaching the pinnacle of one's aspirations and desires in this worldly life. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is questioning the whereabouts of those individuals who have achieved their utmost goals and ambitions in this transient world.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 20:

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and the temporary nature of our achievements. The pursuit of wealth, status, and material possessions may bring temporary satisfaction, but they do not lead to true fulfillment or lasting success. The world deceives us with its allure, diverting our attention from the ultimate purpose of our existence.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) question challenges us to reflect on the true purpose of our lives. Are we solely focused on worldly ambitions, or are we striving for something greater? Are we content with fleeting achievements, or do we seek eternal success?

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 200:

And when you have completed your rites, remember Allah like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance. And among the people is he who says, 'Our Lord, give us in this world,' and he will have in the Hereafter no share.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking Allah's pleasure and focusing on the Hereafter, rather than being solely preoccupied with worldly gains. While it is not forbidden to strive for success in this world, our ultimate goal should be to attain success in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) question serves as a reminder for us to evaluate our priorities. Are we investing our time and efforts in pursuits that will benefit us in the eternal life, or are we consumed by the temporary pleasures and achievements of this world?

Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that true success lies in aligning our ambitions and desires with the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is not about reaching the highest peaks of worldly accomplishments, but rather about striving for righteousness, seeking knowledge, and fulfilling our responsibilities as Muslims.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was the embodiment of knowledge and wisdom. His pursuit of knowledge and his commitment to justice and righteousness are exemplary for all Muslims. He understood that true success lies in seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and serving humanity.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to reflect on the purpose of their lives and the true nature of worldly pursuits. It urges us to prioritize our spiritual growth and the pursuit of righteousness over the transient achievements of this world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to seek success in the Hereafter and grant us the wisdom to make choices that align with His pleasure.
