مَنْ صارَعَ الحَقَّ صُرِعَ۔
One who fights against the truth is thrown down.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ صارَعَ الحَقَّ صُرِعَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who fights against the truth is thrown down.
This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the consequences of opposing the truth and the ultimate fate of those who choose to go against it.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words used. The word (saara'a) "صارَعَ" means to fight or struggle against, while (al-haqq) "الحَقَّ" refers to the truth. The word (suri'a) "صُرِعَ" means to be thrown down or defeated.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of adhering to the truth and the consequences of opposing it. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:140)
And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
This verse highlights the injustice of hiding or denying the truth, which ultimately leads to a person's downfall.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, Allah states, (Quran 8:62)
And if they intend to deceive you - then indeed, Allah is sufficient for you. It is He who supported you with His help and with the believers.
This verse reminds us that those who oppose the truth and try to deceive others will ultimately be defeated, as Allah is the ultimate source of support and guidance.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a warning to Muslims, reminding us of the consequences of fighting against the truth. When individuals choose to go against the truth, they are essentially fighting against the divine guidance and wisdom bestowed upon us by Allah. This can manifest in various forms, such as denying the teachings of Islam, spreading falsehoods, or engaging in unjust actions.
The consequences of opposing the truth can be seen in both this world and the hereafter. In this life, individuals who fight against the truth often find themselves facing difficulties and hardships. Their actions may lead to the loss of credibility, strained relationships, and a sense of inner turmoil. Moreover, their misguided efforts can have negative consequences for society as a whole.
In the hereafter, those who persistently oppose the truth will face the ultimate defeat and humiliation. They will be held accountable for their actions and will be deprived of the eternal blessings and mercy of Allah. As Muslims, it is essential for us to align ourselves with the truth and strive to live in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thought-provoking Hadith serves as a reminder for us to seek knowledge, understand the truth, and stand firmly upon it. His unparalleled wisdom and knowledge make his words even more significant. As Muslims, we should strive to emulate his example and follow the path of truth, for it is through the truth that we attain success in this life and the hereafter.
May Allah guide us all to the truth and protect us from the consequences of opposing it. May He grant us the wisdom and strength to always stand firm upon the path of righteousness. Ameen.
